If I could offer any words of advice/support to younger me, who was experiencing years of IPV: 1. You matter, you have value, & you are worth more than how he makes you feel 2. One day, you will spread your wings 3. Hang on, I see you 4. The shame belongs with him 5. You'll find your place #DVAM

I think university comms folks can be helpful with review/editing! They straddle that line. Lol. And @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social were excellent with that big push for local op-eds penned by scientists to celebrate NIH/NSF funding as massive investment achievements.

And op-eds can feel especially awkward + challenging since the audience is a mixed crowd!

As I am in the "quals-ing pt. two" phase, I decided to take a beat to appreciate the new life I grew inside of me who will be 5 months old tomorrow and the progress I have made with my research, but also feel genuine excitement for what is next in my personal and professional environs.

As an IPV survivor and a milspouse, addressing this gap is deeply personal. Thank you to my amazing participants and my advisor, @nmscaglione.bsky.social, for helping me launch this study. I’ll be presenting these findings to the FL National Guard later this month. 💜 #DVAM @ufresearch.bsky.social

In honor of #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, I’m proud to share that my college UF HHP featured my research in UF News! I conducted a pilot study characterizing IPV-related head trauma in military spouses, a population vastly underrepresented in research compared to service members/veterans.

As I transitioned into my doctoral studies, I discovered a massive gap that needed to be addressed through research and advocacy across both of these very distinct, yet interconnected, parts of my identity. This research would not have been possible without my amazing participants.

My husband just retired from the US Navy today, after 20 years of dedicated and honorable service. I was an active duty milspouse for 8 years. And before that, I was with an abusive partner for 4.5 years. I am an IPV survivor.

Unrecognized head trauma may be contributing to addtnl, or compounded, adverse health as they navigate interpersonal, social, and structural challenges in this context. They may be referred to as "dependents," but I am here to say they are IN-dependent & prove it day after day, year after year.
100
Sam Goldstein @samschuelstein.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
They have unique health needs during their tenure as milspouses (e.g., trailing spouse or solo parent), & they too deserve prioritized support from mil leadership & just better understanding from those in the civilian world about what they manage regularly (& no, they didn't "choose" this life).
100
Sam Goldstein @samschuelstein.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Milspouses are mission critical! They are constantly pivoting between multiple roles (e.g., parent, primary support person, student, their own careers), and do it very well, yet research only seems to consider their needs as secondary to their Active Duty or Veteran partners.

Sam Goldstein @samschuelstein.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This is a population often overlooked and vastly underrepresented in research when compared to service members and Veterans. I will be presenting my findings later this month to the Florida Army Reserve/National Guard in a virtual seminar to support #DVAM.
