And the worry isn't universal. The US ranks near the top of the 25 countries Pew surveyed, half more concerned than excited. Much of the rest of the world uses the same technology and feels a lot calmer about it. www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...

For all the AI existential danger talk, nobody's made the case that Skynet is coming. "Maybe might happen" seem to be doing most of the work.

During COVID, I remember chocolate hummus being the only hummus left at the grocery store. Apparently even panic buying had limits. I assumed it was awful. Turns out it’s pretty good. It’s basically chickpeas, cocoa, and sweetener blended into a chocolate dip.

We as Americans cannot fathom how profoundly destabilizing Trump’s insane Greenland saber-rattling was to European allies. It was a rupture that will never be fully repaired — and yet America has already forgotten it.

The $200B request tied to Iran looks less like a bill for the war so far and more like a signal of scope. Early costs have been high, but a request that large likely reflects not just ordnance prices, but replenishment and expectations of a longer campaign. #IranWar abcnews.com/Politics/pen...

All of it could have been solved by one purse snatching. The guy in the theater was right about the plot. The prediction about our delivery-everything lives and messaging instead of talking, however… uncomfortably spot on.

Rewatched The Net. Sandra Bullock’s character was easy to erase because she ordered pizza online and no one really knew her. Meanwhile I have a disturbingly long list of things shipped to my house because it’s more convenient than going out in public. We really did normalize 90s dystopia.

The Houthis aren’t pirates. UNCLOS defines piracy as violence at sea for private ends. The Houthis are fighting a political war. Perhaps closer to buccaneers: irregular maritime actors with quasi-state backing from Iran using violence to disrupt trade and extract concessions #Houthis #MaritimeCrime

You could take it to the extreme: have students run a prompt through AI and then critique the output for accuracy and inaccuracy. It’s a practical way to sharpen critical thinking and evaluate AI’s limits and strengths.

I’m working to allow AI in my class—for brainstorming, outlining, and feedback. If it’s used for proofreading, students must submit both pre- and post-AI versions. Granted it’s a two page addendum w/examples rather than a neat paragraph in the syllabus.
