“Are you trying to be the park ranger version of Bru—” Stalling, I let the steam warm my face before I take a sip. If I remembered how words work, I’d change the subject.

Well, guess what I don't like?
I don't like funding wars that blow up babies and starve children and spread disease so a bunch of rich assholes can make their billions and hide from the island files.
I don't like listening to you bitch about your expensive boat fuel because across the globe, people are burning and at home rape victims are ignored
and maybe the word fuck
should be the least of your worries when talking heads are justifying
the slaughter of students because those girls are future mothers
of future enemies and by enemies, I mean people you
will condone bombing because 'they hate us'].

I cannot emphasize this enough— klling kids fucking sucks way worse than a four-letter word
and people who drop bombs on schools are the fucking villains.
Another thing that's worse than the eff word is when you claim Jesus is king
and then not only vote for, not only defend, but idolize leaders who justify bombing school girls
in one breath, rave about ballroom draperies and gold leaf in the next,
and then turn around and call it freedom.
Maybe you
should get a real fucking problem.

is thicker than water,
but when your family was built at the bottom of a lake-walked out of a stone hearth through flames, flooded
branches burned yet water logged-
then blood is just water.
When your dad was terrified
of mice because one time his brothers tied him to a tree and let tiny clawed paws run over his body,
and then years later when you're floor camping on shag carpet littered with ash and wood shavings from logs thrown in the stone fireplace,

you find out your dad is also afraid of bats and bats chasing
giant moths in the middle of the night.
Later, you think he must have killed them: heart racing, broom in hand.
How are you supposed to sleep now?
Or ever.
When blood is just water, all you take from your dad is his guitar but not his music;
you take his blue eyes-their fear, not their stories, just water.

Stetson was built for survival. After two decades of blending in with the straight boys and enduring his father's relentless prepper training, he's better prepared than most when the ENVI-24 pandemic becomes the zombie apocalypse in a matter of months. Stetson saves the only other survivor at his parents bunker settlement-a tween girl with a mouth full of braces, a judgy attitude, and a Bible. In a desperate search for community to help raise Harper, he makes his way to Queen City, killing zombies and dodging a zealous preacher bent on collecting women and children for his compound. If Stetson wants to join them and have help raising Harper, he'll have to prove his zombie-killing worth and move past that whole handcuffing thing. Oh, and also avoid getting exterminated as a threat to the Preacher's regime and the dentist's growing horde.
