With each passing day, I regret more and more, telling the students in my lab I don't like the thumbs up emoji. 🫠

Someone once asked me "If given the opportunity, what would you ask God about music?" I never really had an answer. Now I don't even think I'd be interested in asking God a question about music, because that would take away from me working towards such an answer, if there even is one.

Run the mini exploratory study, to figure out the bigger exploratory study, to figure out the actual study... so on and so forth.

Switching to cloth posters this summer was the best professional decision I've ever made.

A friend and colleague asked me to write for her substack. So I wrote on some recent work. open.substack.com/pub/mtmola/p...

Very happy this is now published! Here, we find that participants, regardless of musical training, are fairly good at explicitly matching looped harmonic progressions! emusicology.org/article/id/6...

What an incredible gift to begin your summer with a conference. It's a fantastic feeling starting my most productive time of the year inspired!

Beyond proud of my students for crushing it at their first presentation today!

I have received emails from 7 different neuroscientists today, for 7 unrelated reasons. Normally, I receive 0 emails from neuroscientists, and sometimes texts from 1 neuroscientists.

Good man. That pain never really goes away. Even if the offseason, it lingers... Still, this was their best season since 2006!

I think there is a reason they haven't taken off in terms of popularity...

Its a padding that is supposed to help with concussions. They're supposed to be super helpful in negating any head impact.

I see so many excellent records here. One could only assume then, rightfully, that Train's entire discography is also present within the collection. Also Incubus and Matchbox 20. And Hoobastank.

Watching the Drew Carey Show brings me a cathartic sense of peace. So does finishing an IRB... I think that's basically it.

Sounds like I'm in great company. 55 year old wine moms from Wisconsin are the backbone of the world's economy.

The people of Toronto are wise. They are not Drake fans, they are Train fans, given that Ontario borders the home state of Train singer Pat Monahan.

Point being, if I take just as long to explain to A.I. what it needs to do, why would I not write the thing myself?

Sammy @sammygardner.bsky.social · 22/09/2025
I just had to write an email that was simultaneously, complex, but low stakes. It took me about 15 minutes. I'm just left thinking how A.I. could possibly have made my life easier in this regard... it can't? It would have taken me just as long writing a prompt to explain the situation.

Every Friday I meet with my research students, and every Friday I am left wowed by the amazing questions and ideas the have. Today produced four pages of notes of thoughts and ideas, and its just a treat, it really is.

It has taken over three years, but I have finally submitted and IRB that did not require revisions!

You know what album has an incredible bullpen: Train's "Drops of Jupiter." Once you get passed all the singles, then you got tracks like "Mississippi," "I Wish You Would," and "Getaway," amongst others. The Blue Jays of 90s alt rock, if you will.

I don't understand the need to use AI for emails when you can just hastily send one with zero proofreading.

On Prolific, "we estimate that about 34% of online study participants use LLMs to answer open-ended questions atleast some of the time..." Seems like a very timely paper for behavioural scientists using online samples: osf.io/preprints/so... ; We really need more papers on this issue

This is the one time a semester where I can prep Aural Skills and have music in the background! It's when I'm setting up my syllabus...

I find myself rereading the same couple of books every year or two. A summary is never the point. It's always about getting something new out of some small idea somewhere tucked away.

Some would argue, that what happened in 1992 was a key argument that lead to the break up of the PA based band "Rouge Gallery." Their singer would move to CA to start the Grammy Award winning band Train. They would eventually write the song "Hey Soul Sister." A hit beloved by all.

Beaming with pride after having two students give public presentations today, and beyond their excellent presentations, they were just completely dominant in the Q&A.

Obviously, it's odd these days... However, I feel like I should mention: During the entire first year of my PhD, I would watch, and fall asleep, to The Osbournes. I also vividly remember my parents telling me to not watch it when I was 10.

Yet another band you just get totally wrong. Train is excellent. Now, I do agree that Hey Soul Sister is a worse song than anything from their first two albums, but alas. Actually! I believe their album "Live at Royal Albert Hall" came out last year, and I listened to it walking around Banff.

I often write and edit at this hotel. Seemingly, many moons ago, I "forever borrowed" a pen of theirs. I had to pull it out today, while working at their bar. The bartender shot me a look... I'm not sure I can ever go back.

They are, objectively, the second best artist to come out of Canada, and one of the greatest of all time. Steven Page's solo stuff is also great.

we don't joke about Incubus, Bryn. They one of the defining bands of history, along with Third Eye Blind, and Hoobastank.

Incubus? Touched my soul with their musical perfection! My students? I guess they just weren't born at the right time...

Would it really be an issue if I exclusively used the music of Incubus to teach all my classes...?

Kinda surreal moment today where this student who I taught as an undergrad (while I was a grad student), I got to lead in discussion while they were a grad student (and I a professor).

Making edits to a paper feels more stressful than writing it. When I'm writing, I can say anything; when I edit, it has to be good....
