If Florian Wirtz is covering the most distance, by a significant amount too, you have issues behind him. The focus should be on that. www.patreon.com/posts/169405...

Enjoyed reading about how Richard Hughes wanted Nuno Mendes and that but would be nice if The Athletic could do one of those deep dives into why he thought it was best for business to give Grav and Dom new, improved deals.

Fourth game on the bounce now that Wirtz has covered the most ground. £116m marathon man because the midfield don't have the profiles/brains for a double pivot.

Will probably get pelters for this but I've quite liked the use of Kerkez so far this season. Iraola treating him like a full-back and not having him heavily involved in the buildup.

Signed Jacquet in January, hijacked Munoz in June and then eventually got Barcola done on the final day of August. Managed to recoup money for one player (Jones) and even then it felt like we caved given the current market. Not a great last hurrah for Hughes.

This Barcola ‘saga’ is one of the most boring I can remember. Isak dragged on but at least we had strikes, statements and months of complete Newcastle headloss with that

Liverpool need wingers to stretch the play and threaten in behind. Minteh isn't the sort to constantly cut inside so the fact he's a left footer on the right isn't an issue. Would prefer if he wasn't injured but I'm probably asking for too much there.

Jeremy Jacquet, good at football.

Keep seeing squad depth pictures that list Leoni, Ekitike and Bradley as options. Doubt we see any of them before the turn of the year at the earliest. Leoni can't be far away but I think we'll ease him back in.

I'm told Tommy Elphick will be a pivotal appointment for Liverpool. Will act as a buffer between the "tactical obsessed genius" that is Andoni Iraola and the players. www.anfieldwatch.co.uk/liverpool-fc...

The low block concerns are valid but there's a huge difference between the opposition ceding possession because they know we'll do nothing with it and teams surrendering the ball because they've been smothered by an aggressive, high press. Slot was the former, Iraola the latter.

2223

Sam McGuire @sammcguire90.bsky.social · 02/06/2026

A huge plus with Iraola is he platforms attackers properly. They're the difference makers and the game changers. Liverpool did that under Klopp. That's where the value is.

1285

Sam McGuire @sammcguire90.bsky.social · 02/06/2026

Klopp made changes to his system, not his style, when he was appointed Liverpool manager. I imagine Iraola will do the same and adapt to the squad he'll have at Anfield.

1192

Sam McGuire @sammcguire90.bsky.social · 31/05/2026

Liverpool's data dropped off around February 2025 and never truly recovered to the highs of late 2024. I think that's why they had to part ways with Slot. It wasn't a blip. It was the norm. Lots changed but the numbers remained consistent, which points to system over personnel.

Pissing Mo Salah off six months into a new, improved two year deal wasn't very smart. Neither was failing to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. For a smart club, we're making a lot of dumb decisions. open.substack.com/pub/anfieldw...

Even when Klopp had a tough year here, we'd always finish *strongly*. We've won just seven of our 19 Premier League matches in 2026, and four of our last 10.

If Hughes and Edwards really are off next summer, not sure they'll be binning off Slot to oversee another turnover on and off the pitch.

One of the — many, many — issues with having no discernible identity or style of play, is that when you need to turn the emotion and intensity up for a big occasion, you don’t have any habits or muscle memory to put that shit into, so it just becomes 11 dudes individually winging it at high speed

Over the two legs of PSG v Liverpool Mo Salah played the most balls into the box (12), had the highest xA (0.52), 2nd most touches in the box (14), and 3rd most chances created - of all players for both sides. He played 59 out of a possible 180 mins.
