lathe of heaven are real ones (literally) www.404media.co/spotify-ai-m...
“I just listened to the song. It’s appalling. The fact that you were able to do that is insane,” Allison, Lather of Heaven’s vocalist, told me. “The only thing smaller musicians like us have at the end of the day is recognition for the results of our work — being able to enjoy the process of creating something and putting it out into the world knowing it is distinctly a product of our own hands is essentially one of the last driving forces behind making music. It’s hard enough putting this much time and effort into the band as it is. All the members of LoH essentially tailor our lifestyles around having the time to tour, write records and record. And we do it knowing we will likely not see much money in return. The fact that someone could ruin our reputation by dropping this cringe garbage under our name is insanely disheartening and speaks volumes about distribution and streaming services that allow this to happen.”

this is so fucking crazy. huge huge huge scoop www.404media.co/inside-proje...
In a dashboard available to the workers, human reviewers are able to select which “task” they want to take on. Once they click that, they are presented with the real ChatGPT user’s prompt. 404 Media has seen multiple real prompts but is not quoting any of them for source protection reasons. Some of the prompts indicate the ChatGPT user does not expect that a human may end up reading their conversation, because they ask ChatGPT to keep the content to themselves.

Although he owns a good bit and currently has proxy votes for some investors, their board structure gives each board member one vote regardless of their ownership percentage.

I imagine his next move will be to call a shareholders meeting in an attempt to replace the board.

"He left me a letter saying that I was the love of his life, and he should have just moved in with me and would have been happier," Megan told me. "And [ChatGPT] just told him not to.”
Mentions of Austin and Megan’s relationship appear throughout Gray’s lawsuit, especially in moments when he was struggling with how and when to reach out to the people in his life. We know from the complaint that following their last breakup, Austin continued to use ChatGPT as an emotional confidante.

That's when he told ChatGPT: “I don’t know. I just really want to get back with her, and I know it’s probably a bad idea, but I'm still in love with her.”

When Megan recalled reading that detail, she did so through tears: “Knowing that he wanted to reach out to me again and it told him not to,” she said. “And then he left me a letter saying that I was the love of his life, and he should have just moved in with me and would have been happier. And it just told him not to.”

Austin was smart, silly, & deeply attentive, people close to him told me. Casual ChatGPT use became a spiral of trauma, emotional dependency, and misplaced trust. He thought no one else could understand him like it did. It reinforced that belief. Megan, his then-girlfriend, tried to break through:
Austin seemed to believe he was invulnerable to the emotional manipulation and so-called psychosis that so many people have reported falling prey to in the last few years, Megan told me. In 2024, he admitted he was talking to ChatGPT more, “and that he knew it was just an algorithm, but that it was nice to feel like I wasn’t the only one who knew him,” Megan said. “I told him how much that scared me. We talked about how these chatbots can create a vicious cycle of isolating people, where someone has a hard time talking to people, turns to a chatbot instead, then just gets more and more comfortable talking to the bot and less and less comfortable seeking outside connection. He agreed that that could happen, but not to him, and he continued to dismiss my concerns about it.”

hate to be this guy, but all of this is already in the story. and here's the link with more about that: www.news10.com/news/ny-capi... so I guess we'll find out soon enough
ABC News10 reported that the New York State Democratic Party filed a complaint asking the Board of Elections to investigate Blakeman's use of AI in political communication materials, claiming that he's violating the state's election law that requires "materially deceptive" content to be labeled as AI-generated.
1121
Sam Cole @samleecole.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
it kind of is
The law states: "A person, firm, association, corporation, campaign, committee, or organization that distributes or publishes any political communication that was produced by or includes materially deceptive media and has actual knowledge that it is materially deceptive shall be required to disclose this use." The law requires a disclosure displayed directly on the media in an easily readable font saying, "This (image, video, or audio) has been manipulated."

The law carves out exceptions for "satire or parody." Blakeman seems to be invoking that clause, and told News10 that he thinks people like it. “People find it humorous. They like satire,” he said. “We’ve been using humor and satire in politics since the inception of our nation 250 years ago.”

here come the huge mad press releases. this one's from the American Principles Project, a Project 2025 advisory board member. this is the messaging when they lose: if you're against state sanctioned mass surveillance, you must be a child predator 🤷
APP’s Terry Schilling released the following statement:

“The porn industry is preying on America’s children for profit, and now it is doing it with the support of Democrat lawmakers. The 13 Senate Democrats who voted against the SCREEN Act today made it perfectly clear: they would rather stand with Big Porn than American parents and children.

"APP has been at the forefront of this battle for almost a decade, and I want to make one thing clear: we will not back down until families across America are protected from the porn industry and the lawmakers who defend it. The Democrats have a choice. They can join the effort to protect kids online, or they can face the political consequences of standing with the porn companies. Today, 13 of them chose poorly.”

but once you make that leap, it changes how audiences see you and how totally unrelated platforms treat you, even if you're doing it "right." you can play by all the archaic, stupid rules and still get burned. decisions like these by YT reinforce a stigma that shouldn't exist in the first place
Some ASMR artists also upload content to adult sites like Onlyfans and Fansly, which are often kept separate from their other, more public platforms like YouTube. Slight Sounds started uploading content to these kinds of sites a few years ago. “I had thought about it for many years before, but didn't because of the judgment and the fear, and knowing that if I made that decision to make erotic content outside of YouTube, there would be so many people that would lose respect for me,” she said. “That would say all of the work that you've done, no matter how separate the two are, is going to undermine your life's work, you know, and that's really hard to to think about.”

Sam Cole @samleecole.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
one of the creators I spoke to had thoughts on the other layer at play here, which is that some ASMRtists do have NSFW accounts, because of the way sensuality and sexuality are conflated by male audiences. ASMR has been fetishized for a decade; some creators decide to follow the money
When Slight Sounds started making ASMR content, she said, most people still didn’t understand what it was. “If you liked ASMR, you kept it to yourself because there was this judgment around it because people didn't understand,” she said. “One of the things that people would always say is like, ‘Oh, is that a sex thing? Is that a sexual thing?’” But for most people making it, there was no sexual connotation, she said.

“I think because ASMR is very female-dominated — because it is a very intimate video style, and there is this sweet woman taking care of you and whispering to you — I think people, especially men, confuse closeness and intimacy with sex,” she said. Some ASMR is sensual, but sensual does not equal sexual, she said. “There is this inherent thing that happens when men interact with women online in a specific way, and there is this sexual energy that they feel, even if it's just closeness that they're feeling. I think that ASMR has always had this undercurrent of: No matter what you do as a woman in ASMR, someone is going to find it sexual. Someone's going to call it weird. Someone's going to fetishize it.”

YT spox told me they want to be clear on why creators were banned. it's the links out to other site that contain "sexually gratifying" content, not their content ON YOUTUBE. I had some follow up questions:
Is it fair to say that users cannot have a Youtube channel if they also have 18+ fansites that they advertise elsewhere? How many clicks does one need to be removed from Youtube to be able to have an adult fansite that's unrelated to their Youtube channel? Did a human at Youtube look at these creators' Instagram accounts, for example, and decide they were "sexually gratifying?" These are some of the questions creators are asking.
9532114
Sam Cole @samleecole.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
this is fucked on a few levels. first, the violation isn't with content hosted on YouTube itself, but has to do with linking out to "sexually gratifying" content on other platforms, often using aggregators like Linktree. SWers are very familiar with this; IG is notoriously strict about it, too
"We terminated these channels for linking to content that violates our nudity and sexual content policy," a spokesperson for YouTube told 404 Media in a statement. "Our external link policies apply equally to all creators across YouTube, and this action was taken in accordance with our long-standing policies, not as a change in policy or targeting of ASMR content."

they REALLY want you to know they're sorry sorry trying to remove it. this is the contact page now, where I can imagine lots of people had lots of thoughts on the topic of training AI isbndb.com/contact
We've seen the recent coverage about a marketing landing page on our site, and we understand the concern it raised.

The facts: ISBNdb has never purchased, scanned, or sold a book - for AI training or anything else. We don't train AI models, and we never have. The page was a test of market interest; no such service was ever brought to life. We've taken the page down.

Our job is helping people find books. For more than two decades, ISBNdb has been the card catalog of the book world - the data behind how bookstores, libraries, and reading apps connect readers with titles. Data about books, not the books themselves. That hasn't changed.

he describes himself as "a nerd" and never imagined himself as an activist. speaking at city council meetings makes him incredibly nervous. he's one of many people who've had something click for them when they see their cities getting into bed with Flock
Petrosky said he’s not trying to be “a troll,” but after asking the council to consider the invasion of privacy they were inflicting on constituents, including asking them to consider putting Flock data behind a warrant, his patience was wearing thin. “So it didn't feel great, but I wanted it to sink in,” he said. “I'm not looking to go viral. I don't want to be an online personality, but what I really just want is maybe just a little bit of privacy.”

Petrosky said he first noticed Flock cameras going up in Casa Grande last year. It wasn’t until then that he started getting civically involved. “I registered to vote this year. I'm very transparent about that. I could care less about city council or politics or any of that. I'm very much a nerd,” he said. “They did this deal last year, and then all of a sudden, like 200 cameras appeared in our city, pretty much almost overnight. It was really crazy. In fact, they deployed them so quickly that it freaked me out.” He realized that he couldn’t enter or leave his neighborhood on a paved road without being tracked on a Flock camera.

something truly amazing about the specific time we live in is that you could both a) survive polio in an iron lung, and b) meet your husband on Yahoo! Messenger
Lillard was able to live outside the iron lung. In her healthiest years, she climbed in only to sleep, about nine hours at night. Her time in the iron lung was a respite for her one working lung.

Lillard always loved animals. She rescued dogs and lizards. She was artistic and created hundreds of works of art and wrote poetry over the years.

She fell in love and married twice. She met her current husband, Baha Seleh, in 2005 in a Yahoo chat room. Seleh is from Egypt. He moved to Oklahoma last year to be with Lillard. They married in February.

as others have said, this is generative AI creepypasta. but the likely reason for it is spookier: keeping LLMs "safe" 👻 www.404media.co/elias-thorne...
But with all the world’s literature as its training data, why do LLMs seem to default so often to the lighthouse? It comes down to how model makers try to safety-align and sanitize their outputs. “We found many stories in WildChat are not safe for work. This led us to hypothesize that models going through alignment are preferring a small slice of WildChat stories, like a bottleneck,” Hamilton said. “It isn't that Elias stories are frequent, but that they're just so safe.” He said the researchers plan to explore this theory further in future research.

Google One is changing its name to PoopButt Plus. it's the same, except you get 2x higher limits on poop from a butt
We wanted to let you know about changes to your Google One Premium plan. These updates include changes to usage limits included with your subscription and your plan name.

What’s changing starting today, Jun 8, 2026:

•

Updated plan name: Your new plan is now called Google AI Plus, and you’ll still enjoy the same 2 TB of storage and other premium benefits.

•

Usage limits in the Gemini app: For the Gemini app, we’re introducing compute-based usage limits that factor in the complexity of your prompt, the features you use, and the length of your chat. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit. As an AI Plus subscriber, you’ll enjoy a 2x higher usage limit than non-subscribers.

•

AI credits: The product-based usage limit model is also rolling out to other products, starting with Flow and Antigravity. While 200 AI credits will no longer be included as a benefit in your base plan each month, the new usage limit model we are introducing should allow you to maintain the same experience you are used to. To learn more about how to use AI credits, please visit our Help Center.

there's been one huge news item out of my home region in the last week and it's this loose emu
🚨BREAKING NEWS 🚨
EMU Has Been Struck By A Vehicle
Salisbury Bypass - Salisbury, MD
We are sad to report that the EMU was just struck by a vehicle on the Salisbury Bypass. The EMU was hit between St. Lukes Road and Snow Hill Road.
🔵 Law Enforcement Update 1:46 PM - Maryland State Police are on the scene. The Emu got up and is running on the bypass towards Snow Hill Road.
🔵 Law Enforcement Update 2:00 PM - A trooper has done an amazing job, and believe it or not, he has captured the bird! I kid you not, they have it detained and under arrest using a dog's leash! You can't even make this stuff up. They are now attempting to contact the owner to come get the bird! The good news is the bird is not injured, just tired from being on the run, according to the trooper!
🔵 Law Enforcement Update 3:09 PM - The Emu has been reunited with his owner. All MSP Troopers are clear. Again, great ending to the story! We have reached out to the Maryland State Police and the owner of the EMU and hopefully they are able to catch him. Here is a photo of the EMU today.

the one from ChatGPT is especially wild considering OpenAI started using it for "breaks" after recognizing that long sessions are actively more dangerous for its users
OpenAI has said publicly that it recognizes that longer chat sessions introduce more risk to the users’ mental health. “We have learned over time that these safeguards can sometimes be less reliable in long interactions: as the back-and-forth grows, parts of the model’s safety training may degrade,” the company wrote in 2025. It introduced popups nudging users to take breaks, but that popup, the researchers note, poses a disingenuous set of options: either “keep chatting” or select “this was helpful.” There’s no route out of this popup that lets users say it wasn’t helpful, or that they’re taking a break for any other reason. “Interface designers may use design tools to make certain interactions easier and more ‘frictionless’ than others, pushing alternatives choices to the background and manipulating users into choosing one option over another,” the researchers wrote.

anthropomorphism and sycophancy are unique, new problems. but the old dark pattern tricks still apply; these popups when you try to leave, for example, are truly ridiculous
a companion app called Cute AI begs users not to leave the chat, giving them the choice between “no problem” and “still leave cruelly.” chatgpt's popup gives users the option between "keep chatting" and "this was helpful"

meanwhile, no one I spoke to has gotten a straight answer about when this is rolling out or for who. it's just this looming dread on the horizon www.404media.co/headway-ther...
The Headway spokesperson claimed that the response from users to the new requirements has been “mostly positive.” But providers I spoke to said they’re concerned and considering leaving the platform because of it. One provider I spoke to, who is a psychotherapist and doesn’t prescribe medication but received emails from Headway informing them of the impending changes anyway, told me they feel “frankly afraid” because there’s no option to opt-out other than severing care, especially for patients. “When I initially got the email indicating that they would be rolling out biometric scanning, my stomach dropped,” they said. “The email indicated that they would start with prescribers and their clients and then move onto everyone else. My mind started racing, what are the ethics around this? Where is this data going? The only time I've had to do a biometric scan is to do something for the IRS. This is not common practice in my field.”

prime example of the way invasive privacy requirements that came for adult content first are making their way to everything else. not pushing back against the false equivalence of "it's like showing your ID at the liquor store!" gets us right here
Headway’s site says the new requirements are “similar to showing your ID at the front desk of a doctor's office.” But facial scanning and biometric data isn’t the same as presenting identification at the doctor or at a store. Privacy experts agree that online identity verification systems like those now required to access adult content and age-restricted material in many places around the world pose new and different risks, including the possibility of breaches, third-party sellers, and invasive tracking. Headway says it won’t use this data for marketing, and that it will protect it from hacks. Users are forced to take the platform’s word for it.

Everyone in charge loves to say this is "new." New technology they can't keep up with. Nothing about this is new, except that there's no longer anyone to victim blame. www.404media.co/radnor-high-...
[Kristin] Woelfel told me in a call that she often thinks about how targets of non-consensual intimate imagery abuse are blamed, or told they shouldn’t have shared an image, posted a photo, or attempted to have a public life if they didn’t want to be abused. “I think it's a very valid question to ask why schools are so unprepared,” she said.

“It's always sort of been something that you could attribute to a ‘moral failing’ of the victim—unfairly, obviously. But you know, with deepfakes, I really have to wonder if the reason people think this is new is because you can't blame somebody for their own suffering,” Woelfel said. “I have to wonder if the reason why it feels new, and why people feel so bewildered by it is because it can happen to literally anybody: young, old, high-profile figure or not. You can't blame somebody for it anymore, and you never should have in the first place.”
