It began with a promise, as so many betrayals often do.

Twelve years ago, the young angel Illeana fell from the Lands Above and was discovered by a human boy, Piotrek Halvorson. They promised never to hurt one another, forming an unlikely friendship that soon blossomed into something more.

One year ago, Piotrek gouged out Illeana's eye to use its magic for himself, then disappeared.

Now, Illeana traverses human lands on a quest for revenge against the boy she once loved. But when she teams up with Emir, a kid vagrant with a mysterious artifact, Illeana realizes that her search for Piotrek has unearthed a plot much more sinister than a lover's betrayal-- especially because his treachery seems to be connected to the shadowy, magic-wielding order hunting Emir and his artifact down. And when she and Emir uncover the truth behind Piotrek's involvement with the order's plans to reduce the world to flames, Illeana must decide between the vengeance she thinks she wants or the love her heart still quietly yearns for... and whether she is willing to risk the world to get it back.

Told with a dual-perspective, dual-timeline structure, the novel alternates between Illeana's quest and Piotrek's desperate attempts to escape his childhood of tragedy and abuse, including his deal with a dangerous, tempting voice from below who promises him the power he covets at the cost of the only love he's ever known.

Blood dripped from between her fingers as she pressed her hand down on the spot where her right eye should have been, trying her best to push healing magic into it, to stop the bleeding, to stop the pain for just a moment. She needed to get a clearer understanding of her surroundings, of who could have possibly done this to her.

But when her vision finally focused and she saw her lover's hands covered in her blood, her pain multiplied a thousandfold, the physical and emotional agony swirling into one blinding sensation. Incorporeal wings emerged from her back, shielding her in feeble protection, their iridescent golden-white glow casting light on his stormy face.

"I had to do this, Illeana." His voice was as sharp as the skyforged blade in his hand-- the same angel-crafted dagger she'd gifted him all those years ago as a symbol of her trust in him. How ironic.
A red-orange thread weaved across his irises, pulsing with a fiery glow. It pulled taut, and he almost winced. Almost.

Illeana. That was her name, and he was the only one who knew it. For a moment, she'd entertained the idea that perhaps he was possessed, or that someone was disguised as her love, but the moment he uttered her name, she knew the truth. This was really Piotrek, her Piotrek, and he had betrayed her.
