Here’s the thing about reading beautiful writing…it takes time, in large part to accomodate its prismatic, bearly describable wonders…the glimmers at visions corners that dance when the good book is put down and you stare into space.

(1) there is a good book by joy james called “Transcending the Talented Tenth.” I think about it a lot. she reminds us that scholarly stardom (oft masked as leadership) is flawed, that it reproduces inequities at the level of mentorship…

Fifty years after the 1976 Soweto Uprising, questions raised by student resistance remain unresolved. So glad this is out! I return to the 1976 Soweto Uprising at its 50th anniversary and the revolts that preceded it, reading apartheid as a longer settler colonial formation shaped by Dutch and British rule. I engage Black Consciousness, its afterlives, #Fallism, and what still remains to be done.

What makes this moment historically significant is not simply the scale of protest, but what it reveals about the collapsing legitimacy of institutional neutrality inside the global art world. READ MY LATEST BELOW 👇

Questions I learn from Mariame Kaba and Joseph Pierce and Christina Sharpe: What invitations are you issuing? What spaces are you creating? How are you building good relations? How are you working across difference? How are you sounding a note of care? How are you pursuing freedom?

Too much has been made of origins. All origins are arbitrary. This is not to say that they are not also nurturing, but they are essentially coercive and indifferent. —Dionne Brand, A Map to the Door of No Return

Judith Butler has a recent moment when they talk about gender as a lifelong project, as happening across a life, and mentions how new gendered possibilities make different kinds of legibilities and choices available. This is also true of sexual practices. What we like changes. And should.

a reminder by Polo Moji, "if our knowledge of the world is mediated by presence of language, how does naming the production, circulation and reproduction of a heteropatriarchal fluency render the ordinary violence, to which feminised bodies are subjected, visible?"
