Alf is one of our GCSE, migrant to Britain case studies. It was wonderful to see so many of our historians totally star struck. It was a pleasure to witness history lessons become real for them! Thanks again @alfdubs.bsky.social for a wonderful morning.

Today, Bolder Academy needs to say a huge thank you to @alfdubs.bsky.social Year 10 & 11 (& staff) were totally wowed! Loads of students stayed behind to shake Alf’s hand and thank him for his service, or ask (brilliant) questions. I felt immensely proud of our brilliant ‘bold’ kids

Thank you to everyone who came to our second Ark Soane History conference yesterday. It was such a joy to see so many history teacher colleagues together. As always, I’m proudest of our pupils who were so keen to help and talk about history. What a lovely day. #Soane25

‘Pulling up trees’ probs a poor choice of phrase given Michael Riley’s current work on climate history… sorry!

All a pretty pertinent reminder that when I was 7, & probs still getting over Southgate missing THAT penalty, & def. not thinking about the past, @counsellc.bsky.social, Michael Riley & Jamie Byron were already pulling up trees & sorting out history ed in the UK. They knew/know what they’re doing!

Again, I find students can find making sense of the power the medieval Church could command tricky. It’s seems obvious to me that, whilst simple, illustrations like these could help.

We zoom in, then, we zoom out. I’ve found the latter tricky in the past when getting students to think about the power of medieval monarchs. Tables like this one could offer such simple ways of managing this. 5/6

Change after the Norman Conquest. OK minor updates required, but, the illustration is, I think, lovely.

Right now, post reflecting on just how memorable this can be (if just for me at least…) making plans potentially use bits and bobs in my own history classroom. Saxon rebellions and the Norman Conquest - what a map! 3/6

Today’s reading. Full of nostalgia for me. It’s the textbook I most remember (with f fondness) from my own school days with my inspiring history teacher, Mrs Blacksland. The illustrations, the stories, cartoons - brilliant!

Confession - I love old history textbooks & have way too many… my wife (justifiably) gets frustrated by how much room they all take up… 1/6

Have you ever seen a box FULL of #Viking oval brooches?! In 2018, I had the immense privilege of being part of a viewing at the National Museum of Scotland as part of our #Vikings in Scotland: 20 Years On conference, which served as the precursor to our EUP book, The Viking Age in Scotland.

@alfdubs.bsky.social I’m a history teacher at a state school in West London. When we teach our year 10s about Britain’s migration story in the spring term, we teach them about you as one of our case studies! I wonder whether you might be interested in talking to our students in person or virtually?

Sort of did, there was a discussion about whether Alexios would be appropriate. Given lack of follow through on delivery of land, seemed dangerous. Would that fit into the ‘Defiance’ category on SIMS?

Similarly, thinking hard & reflecting on how our wider curriculum ‘connects’ has led to much reshuffling of EQs. Splitting longer EQs into smaller ones revisited at different points at KS3/KS4 has been a real boon. Honestly, the book has totally revolutionised our approach to our curriculum.

Going full circle, applying the principles from the book to all above, & everything else we’ve been working on, has been crazy liberating. Bolder history’s mantra has been ‘less is more’ this term. Focus on conceptual progression & let good stories ‘sing’. It’s been really liberating.

Year 12 enjoyed dressing up too. As always, @historyrichk.bsky.social’s First Crusade simulation was a barrel of laughs & consolidated understanding of a relatively simple, but detailed narrative.

While on Vikings-we kept our annual visit to ‘Birka’s market’. In fact, we ‘visited’ several times this year. Students saw how trade goods arriving in the town grew more exotic across time as the Vikings expanded east and west.

Speaking of, we’ve totally re-thought how we teach the Vikings GCSE. We weren’t doing enough ‘world building’ & our kids were just not connecting their Rus with their Danes; Norse with Varangians. Student voice upcoming-but using Birka even more intensely as a ‘centre of gravity’ has felt powerful.

We’ve been re-writing teacher read stories & texts for all sorts of lessons-inspired by Steve Mastin’s excellent workshop for Hounslow borough in June. Obvs, I’ve especially enjoyed writing Viking stories.
