I remember when I first came out as gay my ma and stepdad talked to me in the trunk of our van and reassured me that it was okay. Then my stepdad told me that this was probably a phase, he wouldn't go to my wedding if I married a girl, and this was all okay as long as I wasn't trans. Whoops.
