I read this yesterday and I'm still digesting it. It's outrageous, horrifying, disgusting. It's also not surprising at all. I'm so sad for this woman and all kids who are under threat of prosecution for telling the truth. I hope she can access support when and if she needs it.

A thousand outrages and injustices in this story. I’ll underscore only one: the victim is an adoptee. And if you don’t know: adopted girls are uniquely susceptible to SA by family members both bc the myth of adoption’s benevolence is a shield and bc perpetrators believe it’s not really incest. 🥚

My maternal grandfather was a ranch hand and both my grandmother and mother were very good with horses (among other animals). I & my middle daughter are this way too. All I ever wanted to do was live on land since I was tiny. For me, it feels like home and freedom, so that's where I come from

That makes complete sense; it's understandable you feel that way. What happened to us affects every part of our lives and we're so often struggling for survival all our lives because of it. Fuck our adopters, especially yours and my wife's.

Ohhh, I have thoughts as having been involved with dog rehab (and to a lesser extent horse rehab) most of my life. I couldn't agree more - it's only communication in that "I want you to be eternally seeking" and "a treat once came for this and might again"

We are officially going to be residents of this small MB town. I will have an office/sewing room where I can see Riding Mountain National Park from my window. Also, none of my neighbors are separatists and to me, that is priceless.

Another. We got to thinking about this community and how welcomed we've felt, as well as how ideal the location is. We decided to look at houses in the area without land, and after touring some, settled on a 1920s story and 3/4 farmhouse on 3 lots for a very low price.

With no current options for an acreage, we had to decide whether we would rent for a while or pivot to a different idea. One of our cats is in boarding and we couldn't extend our stay at this rental which upped the ante. There are so many considerations with my MCAS so it's not simple finding

When the original place fell through due to foundation issues, we had to pivot and find a place to rent. I found a wonderful AirBnB in a small, welcoming town east of Riding Mountain Park. There is so much going on here! It's also close to a new hospital and not far from Brandon.

Well, after a long period of stress & drama, we have been in MB officially for a week. We saw every (so few!) acreages out here in our price range; 2 were possibilities, but 1 was in a hostile area and the other had too many problems to make work. It's been a wild roller coaster of emotions.

For sure. And the laws are generally informed by AP or prospective AP interests, which are mainly around wanting the quickest way to getting a child so they don't have to sit with infertility. They're the once driving the trafficking and it has to stop. Without them there would be no demand.

People who refuse to work through the grief of their infertility should not be making adoption policy. Adoptive parents, potential or otherwise, should not be influencing adoption policy. We will not advance in any meaningful way until APs are decentered in these conversations. 🥚

His religion was more important. So was how other people viewed him. All this is to say that reading that home study made me feel sick. People lie. AP's lie. They're seen as benevolent by the very nature of what they're doing. There's often no protection whatsoever for adoptees once the ink is dry.

I know this was AM's true nature as relatives later told me stories about it that predate her marriage to AF. In many ways, he was a battered spouse. In others, he was a man with a stable career (principal and then teacher) who could have protected us. He just didn't want another divorce.

Was mentioned several times. I was 2. I have flashback memories of being beaten by the time I was 4. I was psychologically tortured and I never ever had a choice in what I did, said or where I went. My AF did nothing but enable and participate in the abuse.

They stated strong religious beliefs, but that they would allow their child to choose for themselves if they wanted to be a part of it. My AF was described as "the strong, silent backbone of the unit". My AM was described as having an outgoing and lovely temperament, and the "warmth" in the home

I read it as trauma responses, a lack of understanding of basic family structure and a lack of a sense of self. Then the AP home study, where they clearly lied to the point where the social worker said she was incredibly impressed with their warm and welcoming nature.

I was further described as stubborn at times and persistent. They noted my heightened empathy, saying that I would take on the feelings of those around me. I'd respond to sad feelings in others by trying hard to comfort them. I was otherwise cheerful. They read all this as positive.

The first described me as a hyperlexic child who played pretend when outside by myself but oriented to others otherwise. I was described as sweet and loving and "would go to anyone". At 2 yrs of age, I was just learning the meaning of "mom and dad", I imagine because I'd had no consistent caregiver

For ages, I've lived in this messed up place of knowing this province is making me sick (fossil fuel related emissions everywhere, high population, ag emissions, etc) and also that my access to treatment is here. My adult kids are also here. This is year three of knowing we needed to leave.
