Grateful to join @seaottersavvy.bsky.social ’s CAWS network. This certification represents everything I’ve built Salt + Noelle around: science-backed fieldwork, ethical documentation, and education that turns passive observers into active stewards. 🩵

I’ve been wanting to highlight some of my favorite iNaturalist observations. Decided to start a weekly recap on my blog featuring these cute cards. #iNaturalist #Wildlife #Birding
Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana) observed at Channel Islands Harbor, CA on January 24, 2026, at 1:58 PM PST.

Wild Wisdom: Western Bluebirds are socially monogamous but occasionally have helpers at the nest, typically adult sons who assist with feeding. (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) observed at Channel Islands Harbor, CA on January 27, 2026, at 1:24 PM PST.

Wild Wisdom: Belted Kingfishers are expert excavators, using their bills and fused toes to dig nesting tunnels several feet deep into dirt banks. (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) observed at Channel Islands Harbor, CA on January 25, 2026, at 4:58 PM PST.

Wild Wisdom: California Sea Lions are among the few pinnipeds that can ‘walk’ on land, rotating their rear flippers forward to gallop across docks and even keep pace with a running human. (The Marine Mammal Center)Audubon's Warbler (Setophaga coronata ssp. auduboni) observed at Channel Islands Harbor, CA on January 23, 2026, at 3:55 PM PST.

Wild Wisdom: Audubon’s Warbler is the only warbler species capable of digesting waxy berries, allowing them to survive on juniper and poison oak berries when insects are scarce. (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

A few scenes that capture why I love living and working on the coast. From early mornings with sea lions and gulls to catching a rare clear view of Anacapa Island, there’s always something new to see around Channel Islands Harbor. Hope you enjoy a little window into life by the water. 🌞

#WildlifeWednesday throwback to my time observing Bird Rock. A dense colony of California sea lions sprawled across the rocky slope, with Brandt’s cormorants perched above. If you're lucky, you might see a few otters nearby. A must-stop on 17 Mile Drive!

New to BlueSky. Figured I’d show up with an otter eating a crab and see where things go. Wildlife Wednesdays start here - field notes, snack attacks, and other stuff I don’t want to forget. 📍 Elkhorn Slough. More at saltnoelle.com/blog #WildlifeWednesday #SeaOtter #SaltAndNoelle #FromTheField
