Aligning with the Single Market isn't enough - fully joining both the Single Market and Customs Union would reduce duplication, cut costs, and help UK businesses trade more easily and confidently across Europe. The longer we delay taking action, the longer businesses are going to suffer.

Increasing protectionism in the UK has led to a significant decrease in UK-EU trade, with many smaller businesses finding the increased bureaucracy prohibitive, leading to reduced, or ceased, exports to the EU. It's time to rejoin the Single Market and Customs Union, and fix our trade ties.

Sir Nick Clegg is right - the Brexit campaign was fuelled by misinformation, and now we are all feeling the impact.
Far from reducing red tape, [Brexit] actually led to an explosion of red tape on our exporters and our borders. It's made us less prosperous, it's arguably made us less safe because we don't cooperate as well with our neighbours on crime. It's certainly made us less influential and relevant in the affairs of the world. Sir Nick Clegg. There's no need to keep looking across the globe for trade deals when the largest trading bloc is right on our doorstep. We must rejoin the Single Market and Customs Union to save our economy.
We're going to have annual summits every year with the EU because you're right, it's really important we trade with China, but geography still matters in trade, and actually the closest and largest trading bloc is not the US with 18% of the trade but the EU with more than 38% of our trade. Brexit has been an unmitigated economic failure: the Bank of England estimates that it has reduced UK GDP by 6-8% and investment by 12-18%. It's the right decision to undo that damage, and repair our relationship with Europe.
Whisper it, but is Keir Starmer quietly reversing Brexit? Six years after leaving the EU, the UK is navigating a delicate balancing act on trade and diplomatic ties with Brussels, as well as with Washington and Beijing. The Irish Times, 30 January.
