Here's a funny thing about the right to vote: it wasn't won by voting.
Two suffragists in period dress, ceremonially putting ballots into a ballot box. The background has been replaced with an elaborate collage of 19th C printing-press parts. The ballots are glowing with radiant spikes. The face of the ballot box has been replaced with an Nvidia Vera Lynn GPU.

Tell me about it. "Required" doesn't mean "unless I say it's not required". If anything, AI makes the problem worse because it will uncritically attempt to do exactly what was requested rather than push back. My key skill as a dev is geek to English translation. (And vice versa)

Yes, this, 1000x this. The whole XY problem is real. Still, you can't let devs come up with solutions in a vacuum either. What is "obvious" to a developer may not be to sales.

This is what happens when you build a language out of theft and bloody-mindedness. It's fun to use, though.

I used this in a job description + questions. Worked really well. You could tell the fools who never even read the top set of bullet points. Some were really salty about it, too, which was a double red flag.

The evening crew thanks you by pre-ordering. ❤️ I read a ton of LitRPG and I found the first book a refreshing take on the genre. Good times!

What is interesting to me is that many primates (and other animals) seem to have an innate sense of fairness as well. It can't all be learned behavior. There are clearly some built in rules because we really notice when they're missing in sociopaths.

Or taking a swing with a sword and ending up spinning like a top. It might make for an effective shield bash, if you can figure out how to stop at the end... I'd worry if the cuirass was not strongly linked to the waist. You could twist yourself in half!

I was just thinking about the same thing and imagined that it just neutralized the weight, but kept the mass, so you have to be super strong to manage it. It's like learning to use a Steadicam, which can reportedly injure you badly when used incorrectly.

I've been reading a lot of Asian inspired fantasy ("cultivation" novels) and I am realizing how much I depend on Western gendered names as cues. I don't have that with "Li Long" or "Wui Xiao". I'm not even sure if there are gendered names in those cultures. It's certainly a different experience.

He wrote a whole series without even mentioning the gender of the protagonist. For the audio book they did two different versions, one with Amber Benson and the other with Wil Wheaton. What is interesting is that not many people noticed and if you ask them they'll confidently tell you a gender.

"Human level cognition" seems like a pretty low bar nowadays. I want PhD level, not fast food worker (with all respect to fast food workers). Or at least "guy who can concentrate for several hours without interruption" level.

In my usage, maintaining my codebase with Codex, I feel like I am paying for some level of cognition. I am able to add features that I would have otherwise skipped because doing them correctly would have taken too much time. I can totally see this in other spaces, if they didn't hallucinate.

I've been lucky that we don't have any mandates at my job. The boss does seem to have drunk some of the LLM Kool aid, but he also trusts me. I don't know what might happen if the price goes up...

I guess that's the thrust of my original comment - there is pretty much no way I could use it without my extensive experience. I am getting better at it, though. More specifically really helps. I'm certainly not trying to sell you on it. I'm just saying my experience mirrors Cory's comment.

I can build out a full spec and plan for weird corner cases that I would have otherwise overlooked. I don't feel like it's taking my job, just making the drudgery a little bit more bearable.

It's less more about allowing me to do more quickly stuff that I could technically do/learn, but where there is little value add in me doing so. I can add little trivial features that would otherwise take me too long to be worth it. I've also found it very helpful as a planning tool.

Another thing I did was analyze 4000+ rows of product pricing data to produce markup tiers. I suppose I could have dune it by hand, but there was a lot of data there and lots of weird manual BS. I was able to use ChatGPT to highlight and explain discrepancy so I could manually fix them.

I needed to sync some database tables to BigQuery. I used Codex to build it tooling to replicate the schema, export my data in NDJSON, and upload it via their API. It's not that I couldn't have learned that all, it's that it would have taken me a week, rather then 2 hours.

This has been my experience exactly. I find I have to use all 35+ years of my programming experience to have an LLM produce good code. When I do this, the results are very satisfying and enable me to do things that I wouldn't normally be able to do... or that I dislike doing manually.

"information decision space" is a nice way of staying that it has a zillion unique systems and terminology, making it challenging to understand what the heck you're supposed to focus on. Beautiful game, but sufficiently unique that it's hard to model effectively.

All I can tell you is that my company advertises on big social media and we get a cost per lead of $100 or so, so our target demographic seems to be paying attention. We're measuring conversions ourselves so it's not falsifiable by them. 🤷‍♂️

A2 moving towards A3. I'm a software developer and I've recently started using LLMs for coding assistance. It's both amazing and not great - I really need to use my navy years of experience to get it to do exactly what I want. I think uses outside software and transcription are pretty suspect.

I'm interested in the vehemence of the response. There is pretty significant pushback on AI related things. Microsoft never had a very good reputation to begin with, they're really playing with fire here.

I watched this with a church full of people and it was an amazing experience. The material is hilarious, but watching it with an audience of hundreds was amazing!
