Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 24/09/2026The Dutch system is great. If it's green you can go and very rarely do you have conflict with another road user. You can assume it's safe. A lot you can do when proper road taxes and gas taxes are paid. 020
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I had weird power problems last week in my building.. it was affecting every tenant. Germain St downtown in SJ. Finally SJ Energy came in and opened the manhole cover. Found a strange ladder in there. Someone opened the manhole cover and tried cutting out my neutral. Novel way to mine copper. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Me: "gas prices? buy a smaller car" Them: "Burn him!" 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 24/08/2026How cool to pass by old museum trams on the way to the shopping mall. Less exciting was building my own propane hose for my new bbq.. serious what's up with that? 040
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 21/08/2026awesome camera. I had some jackass do this to me one day, some old guy rolled down his window as he was driving to make sure he could call me an idiot while I was biking home. 060
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 08/08/202615 GW of solar energy today in the Netherlands on a nice sunny day. I was wondering why I was seeing idle windmills. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Oh I have to try that irish poutine next time I'm in town.. mmmmm 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 21/07/2026There's a frozen pizza brand in the Netherlands we're hooked on that has sourdough crust.. it's so good. 110
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 22/06/2026I rented a car that used the same slider for volume and for the fan speed. It was awful 030
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 22/05/2026I always wondered why such a small province has municipal control over fire and police instead of these being controlled at a municipal level given all of the overhead to run these organizations. Those are pretty big ticket items per municipality. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 06/05/2026Today I tried crossing Rothesay avenue at 9am to catch the bus. Closest crosswalk adds over half a kilometer.. sheeesh 040
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 06/05/2026Electricity generation and flow around the world.. very cool site - app.electricitymaps.com/map/live/fif...app.electricitymaps.comMap | Electricity MapsTrack real-time and historical electricity data worldwide — see production mix, CO2 emissions, prices, cross-border exports, and much more. 0178
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/05/2026Amsterdam.. we have a house just outside the city. I'm back touching up the house and packing boxes.. almost done. 100
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/05/2026House going on the market maybe next week.. this is getting real! 150
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 23/04/2026Chess Piece closed? what happened? Do they still run the ice cream shop? 100
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 16/04/2026YHZ and YQM are really close to the main CN line, would be great to fly to halifax and take the train the rest of the way to saint john. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 14/04/2026We tried to buy a small Toyota Yaris 10 or so years ago and they were very difficult to find. But bigger cars were sitting ready in the lot. I wonder how many people end up buying larger cars just because smaller options are not easy to find. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 13/04/2026What I like is that even in Amsterdam's car infested cesspools (and there are a lot of them) you'll still get protected mobility lanes, BRT, tram lines. When the roads are packed the big double-length bus is still able to cut around all the traffic maps.app.goo.gl/tL5g9r3EZTTd...maps.app.goo.gl 030
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 06/04/2026omg this! oh plus thinking we were going to get nuked. 120
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 04/04/20262.50 euros/litre last weekend for gas when I rented a car 😱 000
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/04/2026Bus priority areas are awesome! We've got a lot of areas here in Amsterdam and the 15 cars (each with one person in them) don't hold up traffic for the 40 of us in the bus. Far more efficient use of the roads. 000
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/04/2026DTI pulled the same nonsense in Saint John too - closing off a key active transportation route for folks in the north end to get uptown (a lot of folks use it, it's healthy and a nice walk and it lets us leave the car at home). 000
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 03/04/2026I missed my stop on the tram this morning (was practicing my Dutch) and went an extra stop.. discovered a beautiful pedestrian area in De Pijp (Eerste van der Helststraat) So lively! Parking sucked though, surprised anyone was there. 020
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 10/03/2026Or this one by my tram stop. Well lit, covered and useful! 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 09/03/2026I like how these Dutch ones have raised metal poles making it easy to chain your bike to them. These are everywhere (and covered at my tram stop. That’s nice. When it’s raining my bike is dry) 000
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Any idea what the source of this was? effluent from a factory? 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 23/02/2026Nothing slows down a driver more than them hitting a speed bump at full speed. The Saint John installed "speed cushions" on a shortcut road connecting North and West. People either slow down themselves or get forced to slow down because of the person in front of them. I'm a big fan. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 23/02/2026Feels like big highways, free bridges, lots of parking and a disregard for BRT and bike lanes would be the priorities that come about with that makeup. 141
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 23/02/2026Maybe a floating dock? (.5 MWh & 800l of water to generate my dumb joke) 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 23/02/2026Wow that's a lot of residential units in that area that can get compltely cut off by a train. I wonder what the solution will be. 140
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 18/02/2026Isn't that funny how we can still hear that phone number being sung in our head. I called it a couple months ago wondering if it was still being used. I remember a less-effective one I believe for the ferry to Digby.. 565-74 something something maybe? 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 14/02/2026This is such a great path. It would be nice to see a lane cut between the bridge and harbour passage to make this part of the trip better. The walk/bike by stresscon is still awful. There's only a single lane crossing the bridge so it's not like we lose anything except people going 70 on Chesley 110
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 10/02/2026I see it's -10/-18 back in Saint John.. I can handle Amsterdam's 6' thank you very much. 🌦️ 030
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 07/01/2026Salty's wow.. I remember going there in the early 2000s. 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 07/01/2026City hall appointment in Amstelveen. No busses. Plowed bike lanes - it was awesome! 140
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 06/01/2026City hall meeting tomorrow at 9am, no busses running and code orange with snow and slippery bike path. Definitely a "don't forget you signed up for this" moment. #codeoranje 000
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 05/01/2026All trains cancelled this morning around Amsterdam Centraal.. chaos! 010
Derek @saintjohnderek.bsky.social · 04/01/2026A couple of big missing use cases: kids biking to school & after school events, quick grocery store trips and parents taking their kids to daycare/school. That seems to be the bulk of what I'm seeing here on the big bike lanes in amstelveen. 120
