Just a guy, a geek, a nerd, trying to survive [gestures widely] all this, while trying to be a good husband, stepdad and cat dad.

"Brain" is more famous, but "learned" is just so much more quotable.

I was delirious and frustrated with my crappy mattress six years ago, during my initial Covid infection, and impulse bought a new one. Surprisingly good decision, in retrospect. Hope yours is just as comfortable!

I've only finished the typical link pieces for my posable vacuum hose design, but figured what the hey, I'll publish what I have so far and add to #FreeCADFriday. www.printables.com/model/183974...

(Er, point on object. It's late.)

P.S. Dear #FreeCAD, including the Point-on-point constraint in the default constraints toolbar might be worth considering, too; I honestly use it far more often than perpendicular or tangent in most projects.

and some visibility issues that need to be tweaked a bit in dark mode (at least, for someone in their late 40's who's been staring at computer screens as long as I have). But even with those in mind, I find #FreeCAD easier to use than Fusion, for me. I didn't think I'd ever see this in FOSS CAD.

It always gets deleted when I get rid of unwanted, "extra" (from my POV) geometry. There are a few other annoyances; lack of auto-constraints on fillets and chamfers in a sketch, difficulty interacting with overlapping geometry (this may just be something I need to learn how to handle better), ...

If there were a mode that only offset in a single direction like pretty much all other CAD software, it would save quite a bit of time. Half of the point of offset in 3D software is an automatic constraint for offset distance, and I've yet to be able to keep one on anything I've done...

Jason Wood @saintdoodle.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
There are a few pain points I would love to see change. The most frustrating from a regular CAD user's perspective is probably how an Offset command works in the sketcher with open lines / arcs / polylines. It always creates a closed wire, creating arcs where you offset a point if needed.

When I say "usable," I don't mean you can do simple things at a much slower pace. I mean I have yet to run into anything that took much longer to do than it would take in, say, Solidworks. (Well, minus a learning curve & Google searches, of course.)

While I've tried FreeCAD in the past, I gave up fairly quickly; it was far too difficult and frustrating to use, at least to someone used to a fairly user-friendly workflow. However, that has changed massively since the 1.0 release. It's often a bit clunkier and slower, but it is usable.

So, I'm about a year into my 3D printing journey, and I'm finally giving FreeCAD a thorough try. For anyone who doesn't know me, these are thoughts from someone who has done professional CAD design for a living for 20+ years. While I've mostly used 2D CAD, much of the same principles apply.

Current events have led to a lot of folks reminiscing on the early days of the Covid pandemic, but those of us with Long Covid don't need the news to remind us - we live there every moment of every day. I can only hope that one day, we can look back wistfully, rather than sorrowfuly.

We actually loved that thing, it certainly did its job. Of course, that's in a time before mobile devices — even before our household had a computer, and our video game time was very limited.

Swiss water process decaf and freeze dried instant coffee both have very little histamine. Finally, brew method makes a difference: cold brew has far less than other methods. Finally, grinding while beans is going to be much safer than ore-ground.

Jason Wood @saintdoodle.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
There are actually quite a few things with coffee that make a difference on histamine levels. Getting higher quality beans is big, as it's more the preparation of beans into coffee than the beans itself that matters; look for a local roaster. (1)

So relieved. My group got dismissed from jury duty, don't need to show up at all. What is normally a mild annoyance had me completely panicking thanks to Long Covid - between messed up sleep and fatigue, I was very worried about how things would go.

I'm firmly convinced that the final test this country will be given is how we deal with all of these horrible people once this admin is gone. If we do the usual "let's just move on," without real consequences, we're done. Assuming we make it that far.
