I watched that film when I was a kid, wow did it sugar coat what he did during the war!

Maybe throw in some Fritz Leiber?

I used to be a volunteer crossing guard at my kids’ school, the weeks in the fall before DST ended were the worst because kids were walking to school in the dark. I’m pro Standard Time year round!

Good for you, my adult child just got over covid so can vouch that it is circulating!

When my old dog had to be relieved of his pain, I had an impression made of his paw (and a lock of his fur). I wonder if this tile was an accident or a memento?

Not my cup of tea but more power to them for letting their freak flags fly! I expect I’ll get a vague update on how it was, will be happy as long as fun was had and creeps avoided

Hey the Folsom Street Fair is happening today! They could show up and get their asses kicked if they misbehave. A relative is attending who would be happy to oblige! 🤜🤛👊

That was how my late wife dealt with a couple of handsy coworkers, she had a black belt in Aikido and they were lucky to get their hands back without broken bones…

Getting a tandem bike is like taking on other challenging things, either it helps you bond or it exposes fractures that have been covered over… (+1 for the Bujold reference!)

I realize that schools in the UK have different requirements, and a degree can take only 3 years!

sailorbp @sailorbp.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I’ve heard of this, the daughter of friends who are from the UK went back to get her degree there because she could finish in three years. Understand it is different from many US colleges

Many members of my family attended the US Naval Academy, where they also studied history and literature and took part in musical performances. I think they still have a Glee Club in spite of recent shenanigans

I attended a well known research university, we _had_ to take at least one Humanities class every term, many taught by tenured professors with solid reputations in their fields. Some of my favorites were classes in the history of Asia and Africa, also Renaissance Lit. We had a theater club too.

Friends who’ve lived in Norway tell me that there is an expression there “Totally Texas!” that means crazy or over the top, I’ve had this confirmed by native Norwegian speakers…

Ah, you are on the east coast. Here in the PNW we had a real gale on Friday and on Saturday clear skies and such weak wind that we spent an hour to sail a half mile against the current, sometimes going backwards. 🤷‍♂️

I was passing through Portland on Monday and was going to meet my son there, but he texted to say he was not well so we cancelled. Tuesday he tested positive for Covid! I'm glad I was not exposed but worry about him, it is kicking his butt right now. No sense of smell, fatigue and a mild fever... 🤞

What the rise of microdramas tells us about the entertainment industry
In the U.S., 66 million people watched one regularly last year.

On NPR yesterday they had a whole segment about short form videos, one amazing fact was that >90% of the top series are AI generated now. Apparently actors and crew went from being busily employed in May to unemployed in June.

I missed this when you posted, oh my God! The one time I’ve seen a manatee it had healed propellor scars from being run over, it was lucky to be alive. We were in the Keys finishing a week on a sailboat with the Scouts, skipper was washing the boat and the manatee showed up and begged for water

I just heard that a friend of a coworker lost his wife in the Nepal floods… same degree of connection to people who died on 9/11 but half a world away. I was appalled at the news already but this brings it closer

Reposting to say that my late parents volunteered helping re-settle Hmong refugees in the 80s and a meal I shared with them was my introduction to S.E. Asian cuisine... oh my God it was so yummy! I'd have been a very happy eater at this feast!

Heinlein was a USNA grad and had some service in the pre-WW2 Navy so had some pro-military baked in… funny story, he was a classmate of my grandfather, when I started reading his books I asked my grandfather about him, my grandfather acknowledged knowing Heinlein but said no more than that…

I sent an email to the reviewer explaining why I was upset, he replied and seemed genuinely surprised that a parent might object to having graphic murder suddenly flashing on their TV screen in front of kids. He did promise to be more careful going forward, but I did not watch anymore to check…

Years ago I was watching what I thought was a family friendly tech review show with my 9 year old kid sitting next to me… they reviewed a violent video game using clips that showed graphic up close violence and were blithely nattering along how fun it was…

“Roosters and hens, and all their feathered friends, they know its time to fly when Ruby’s stomping by. Quack quack quack, ducks will have a heart attack, thats the call of Ruby, y’all!” I had trouble with that last line…

I’ll give it a try: “Went to see Ruby, she’s down on her luck, gave her some grain so she can stomp on a duck!”

A sad example of this was the attempt to rescue the hostages in Iran, what I recall is that the Navy put a bunch of new parts on the aircraft right before the raid and some of them failed in the field immediately “Early Life Failure” is the term for this…

We were Navy brats so did not have strong accents growing up, but she stayed in VA when the rest of us moved away in the 70s and so has marinated in it since then... another sister lives in London and after 25 years sounds rather posh :-)

sailorbp @sailorbp.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I'd argue that someone in a furry suit is more authenticly "Renaissance" than the lady wearing a beer-can pop-top bikini that used to come to the Faire at Black Point Forest back in the 70s

My sister in Richmond VA says to me "Accent? What accent?" in the sweetest Southern Belle tone... I've lived in California and now Oregon since I was a teen so I'm just limited to an occaissional "Y'all" and "Thank you kindly" (and that phrase I picked up from a friend who grew up in Louisiana!)

I stopped eating octopus after meeting one in the wild and seeing that while it was terrified of me it was brilliant at disguise and evasion. I don't mind eating squid, my impression is that the large ones would happily eat me given the chance and so they are fair game in my mind...
