Their justifications throughout boil down to little more than "well, I don't like this writing". Their only actual excerpts that they posted (a grand total of six paragraphs) are nowhere near the damning evidence that they seem to believe. What a pathetic article.

Perhaps the Claude is coming from inside the house! Staccato sentences, a reworded "it's not X—it's Y", and a repetition of your statement in your bullet points? Maybe you should direct your ire inwards, given how these are all signs of AI writing too.

One of their other pitiful justifications is that her writing is hard to read. I think this is much more of an indictment of their lack of literacy (too much time shadowboxing, perhaps?) than a condemnation of Reed.

The em-dash argument is especially ridiculous. Many of my friends can confirm that I switched to using real em-dashes recently (despite decrying them for years), partially *because* of the rise of em-dashes in machine generated output.

This argument may sound ridiculous, but I can assure you that it has more evidence behind it than the abjectly absurd "justifications" "presented" within this article. They are doing what amounts to textual phrenology, pointing to the existence of quote marks and em-dashes as evidence.

At this point, the argument becomes even less believable: that Reed has not only been using LLM generated copy for her articles, but she has also been putting active effort into obscuring the terrible output of it, to the point you would need to (pretend to do) an in-depth analysis. No.

It's even more well known amongst Claude users that getting it to output prose in a normal fashion is near enough impossible. You can try and steer it with the prompts, but it has been RLHF'd enough that it will ignore you and revert back to its house style quickly.

But you don't really need to drill into the specifics because they make the ridiculous assertion that Reed has been using Claude in 2026, including Opus 5. This is obviously false because until last week's release of 5.5, the Claude models had a distinctive, ear-grating prose style.

It's actually very hard to critique the needle article (capital letters intentionally omitted) because they are deliberately being vague about their actual evidence. They post statistics and charts but are unprecise about the data backing the charts.

They curiously omit excerpts until the very end, before making this unsubstantiated claim, which itself has the syntax and form of LLM writing!

If you're going to critique anybody for their writing, you should start with yourself. This is an unnecessary metaphor that stretches across three paragraphs in order to explain "some software replaces quote marks".
