On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we recognize the progress made - and the work that continues - to build a province where everyone is safe, respected and free to be who they are.
A pride ribbon ripples throughout the graphic on a white background, bending at each milestone.

Text reads:
Progress doesn’t happen by accident:
Take a look back at key moments in the history of people's rights in BC - shaped by those who never stopped pushing for change

1969 – Same‑sex sexual activity is decriminalized in Canada

1971 - First gay rights protests held in Vancouver and Ottawa

1973 – BC Human Rights Code is enacted, creating legal protections so people can challenge discrimination

1979 – First Gay Pride Week in Vancouver

1981 – First official Pride Parades in Canada – in Vancouver and Montreal

1992 – Sexual orientation added to the BC Human Rights Code, protecting people from discrimination

2003 – Same‑sex marriage becomes legal in BC and Ontario

2004 – Sexual orientation included in hate propaganda protections under the Criminal Code

2016 – Gender identity or expression added to the BC Human Rights Code

2017 - Gender identity or expression added as a protected characteristic to the Canadian Human Rights Act

2018 – Gender X option is recognized on BC government-issued ID

2021 – Conversion therapy banned in Canada

Together, we move forward:
Because everyone has the right to be who they are and love who they love
