Let's add a playset of beautiful mismatched Strip Mines to the pool!

I haven't, but I'm going to now!

The people I met at MagicCon Vegas played it more like a cube though (they brought all the cards with them) rather than doing it with booster packs like in the article.

Splashing blue is one thing. Splashing blue in a 75 card deck with no sideboard just for Fog Bank, on the other hand, is some next level Platinum-Mythic Ranked Player deckbuilding.

Final Fantasy has like 150+ legends, apparently. I expect this will be pretty common for UB sets where they will want to show off a lot of named characters. With 20 legends per set "legendary matters" can be interesting. With 150, not so much, at least for me.

060

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

Maybe I worded that poorly. What I was meaning that "legendary matters" cards like Jodah or Djeru and Hazoret (etc.) aren't especially interesting when most creatures are legends, because they work with everything. They are much more interesting when there are fewer legends.

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

With the number of legends in Universes Beyond sets I think Wizards needs to sunset "legendary matters" as as theme. It's a cool gimmick in a world where legends are scarce, but incredibly boring when we're getting like 150 legends a set.

Actually not this time. It was Avabruk Caretaker.

Almost accidentally put a day/night card in my Commander Clash deck for this week. Thankfully I caught it before recording. I'm not tracking that...

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 12/05/2025

Yeah, I'm super curious to see how the play. The designs are really interesting.

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 12/05/2025

So far it feels mostly like a Commander set to me, although that might partly be because there are so many legends to show off various characters. The power level seems pretty high, I'm just not sure where most stuff fits in Standard yet.

130

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 12/05/2025

I really like how Final Fantasy sort of feels like Time Spiral or a Horizons set in the sense that there's a ton of one-of mechanics.

Sorry everyone, no stream today. I'm still a bit under the weather and trying to catch up on Youtube stuff after being away last week for the wedding. We'll get back to normal next week.

What was your all time favorite Standard format?

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 04/05/2025

Oh yeah, the $350 is in Canadian dollars, which I think was about $250 USD at the time.

Yeah, there are instructions, but they are pretty basics "make sure you pad the box, don't have any parts sticking out of the box" stuff like that.

I think it's going to be just Arena this time for the sake of simplicity.

Wait, there are places that will do it for me? I didn't realize that existed, I guess that's what I get for living in the boonies.

Sweet! I'll add you to the list!

Super random question: anyone know a good way to ship at PC tower? My new PC broke (probably the motherboard?!?) The good news is it's under warranty. The bad news is need to ship it to the company for them to fix it.

Leaving tomorrow night for Texas for my little brother's wedding. I got a bunch of stuff recorded ahead of time, but will probably end up missing one video, just as a heads up.

Going to battle against viewers for tomorrow's stream. If you want to get on the list send me your Arena info and the format you want to play (stream is roughly from 11am EST - 2pm EST). Can leave your info here if you want, or you can email it to me at SaffronOlive@MTGGoldfish.com

Somehow I've found myself wishing to play some good, clean Modern against decks like Tron.

050

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 26/04/2025

I'm going to have to play more Pauper. I forget how much I enjoyed complaining about Tron since it died off in Modern.

I imagine if it's a straight up lie he could get in trouble, although how likely it is to be enforced I have no idea. Maybe if you compare it to other sets during presales it's the best selling, but he's wording it to make it sound more impressive?

They have said that the Chaos Vault drops are where they can experiment with things, so I'm hoping it's just that.

000

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 24/04/2025

I feel like taking them out of collector booster (or at least reducing the number in collector booster) would be the biggest thing they could do to make that happen.

010

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 24/04/2025

The non-foil is normal price, so if you really want the cards or like the art, snap that off.

2411

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 24/04/2025

I'd really encourage people to skip the foil version of the new Chaos Vault Secret Lair if they don't want $60 foil drops to be the new normal. Seems like a test run to see if we're actually willing to pay an even higher premium for pringles.

71198

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 23/04/2025

I think some people misunderstand my feelings about stax and MLD in Commander. It's not that you can't build decks to beat those things, it's more that building decks to beat those things requires removing a lot of flavorful and fun cards, and Commander is a format I play for fun.

5933

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 23/04/2025

Yeah, my question is for playing with randoms as well. Within a play group none of this really matters, you might as well just make up your own rules and ban list.

120

SaffronOlive @saffronolive.bsky.social · 23/04/2025

Yeah, I mean, in my playgroup none of this matters, I'm more interested in playing with randoms at Magic Cons and such.
