#JCcrashes Newark & 6th St. Yesterday a white sedan was following too closely in the rain and crashed into the vehicle in front of it. Newark Ave has many pedestrian crossings, and drivers must be prepared to stop at all times. Reminder also that distracted driving can easily cause crashes like this

Earlier this month, yet another serious preventable crash happened on our city streets. SafeStreetsJC releases the following statement calling for rapid, low-cost quick-build improvements to all our serious and fatal crash locations, including left-turn calming and leading pedestrian intervals.
On Friday, August 7th at Montgomery & Barrow, yet another left-turning driver hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk in downtown Jersey City, leaving the pedestrian in critical condition. We pray for their quick and full recovery. Last year, at Jersey & 6th and Summit & Sip, two vulnerable road users were killed last year by left-turning vehicles that did not yield. The continued level of injuries of vulnerable road users is unacceptable under Jersey City’s commitment to Vision Zero.

Over a year has passed and no progress has been made on addressing these and other fatal and serious injury crash locations with quick builds and improved street design. Leading pedestrian intervals and banning left turns at key intersections can be done immediately at little cost, if any, to Jersey City; until changes are made, dangerous intersections continue to be dangerous with no relief in sight.

Considering the level of danger on our streets, the time for more studies, more explanations, and more delays is over. We call on Jersey City to get things done and release its plan to reduce injuries at fatal and serious injury intersections, calm left turns, and promote safer, alternative modes of transportation with improved bus priority and building protected bike lanes.

SafeStreetsJC released an op-ed describing ways for Jersey City to increase revenue from parking reform instead of raising property taxes. One way is increased fees at parking meters. Did you know that Jersey City’s parking meter fees are usually only $0.75 and haven’t been updated in years?

Counterintuitively, left-turn restrictions typically reduce congestion. In fact, NYCDOT found it sometimes makes buses faster more than even a dedicated bus lane alone. Many of our recent severe crashes in Hudson County and Jersey City have involved left turns.

Traffic calming in Chatham, NJ. Along their walkable main street, they have: 1. Implemented a left-turn restriction to reduce conflict, improve comfort & safety for pedestrians, and smooth traffic flow. 2. Corners are painted with orange stripes, making obvious the illegal parking zone. /

Why did three buses and several delivery trucks get stuck trying to turn at Jersey & Columbus this morning? Lack of illegal parking enforcement is not only making our crosswalks dangerous, but also slowing down our transportation system. /

Missing crosswalks: Many bus riders directly enter/exit the JSQ bus station on Sip Avenue to get to Hudson County Community College & other destinations. But as with many intersections in Jersey City, one of the crosswalks is missing, forcing pedestrians to navigate around parked cars or cross twice

#JCcrashes We are sad to say there was a fatal crash killing a driver on Route 1 & 9 and Halleck Ave yesterday morning. Route 1 & 9 is notoriously dangerous, and there have been 4 fatalities on Route 1 in Hudson County so far this year. NJ State and NJDOT must make much needed safety improvements.

#JCcrashes Two car crash this morning at Brunswick and Columbus. No verified details on what happened here but drivers often gun and run the light going down Brunswick, which may have contributed to sudden braking on the Columbus side. This half of Columbus is also awaiting a full redesign.

SUVs and pickup trucks are high risk to pedestrians and cyclists. Children are 8X more likely to be killed when struck by an SUV or truck than by a passenger vehicle. But Jersey City does not currently have any policies to discourage larger vehicles.

Why are one-lane streets safer than two-way two-lane streets? 1. They narrow the crossing distance and 2. Eliminate conflicted-left turns, the major intersection danger. How much safer? Data from Montreal shows two-ways result in *75%* more pedestrian injuries (!!) espace.inrs.ca/id/eprint/58...

Illegal parking blocking the bus stop at Newark & Jersey Ave. This slows down buses and creates a hazard for riders getting on-and-off the bus. Jersey City has asked and the hotel developer has agreed to install curb extensions for this location to deter illegal parking and calm turning vehicles.
