Dirk Maes from @europebutterfly.bsky.social: Europe's grassland butterflies have declined 40% since 1991. Agricultural intensification, nitrogen deposition, and habitat loss are the main drivers. #SafeguardFinale

‼️Some takeaways: traffic speed harms bees on road verges, nitrogen deposition has a limited impact in calcareous grasslands, but deformed wing virus is actively spilling over from honeybees to wild bees.

Ingolf Steffan Dewenter highlighted that local plant richness, flower cover, and nesting sites are more critical than total habitat area for pollinator abundance. Landscape strategies like enhanced connectivity, organic farming, and increased edge density support bee and butterfly populations.

Corina Bachofner's presented analysis of 33 datasets across 13 countries that reveals that local flower richness is the primary driver of wild pollinator diversity and pollination efficiency. Small protected areas with high-quality floral resources can significantly support pollinators. 🌸🐝

Safeguard Project @safeguard-pollinators.eu · 25/02/2026
During the panel, speakers raised an important concern: while 23% of EU land is now under biodiversity commitments, many measures remain too small-scale to meaningfully prevent species decline. The push for landscape-level, result-based interventions is growing. #Biodiversity #CAP
