A statement from SAFE's CEO on the deadline to fully fund the Sexual Assault Forensic Nursing program at Eloise House.
SAFE is giving hospital systems an additional week to determine whether they can make financial commitments to sustain the Sexual Assault Forensic Nursing program at Eloise House.

We are hopeful this additional time will allow hospital partners to align on the investment required to maintain this critical service that they depend on, legally and operationally, and that survivors have relied on for over a decade. We remain open to solutions that ensure continuity of care for survivors. If no agreement is reached by the new deadline, SAFE will face the devastating need to proceed with formal notice and plans to close the Forensic Nursing program at Eloise House, with services ending on June 8, 2026.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly. Without sustainable funding, we cannot continue to operate this service at the level survivors deserve. We are deeply committed to avoiding any disruption in care and have taken every available step to prevent this outcome. We remain hopeful that a solution can still be reached. Our focus remains on ensuring survivors in Austin and Travis County have access to the care and support they need without interruption.

The City of Austin is cutting $5.2 million from social services contracts for the 2026 fiscal year, which will affect SAFE. Read our CEO's statement on the impact this will have on survivors. www.fox7austin.com/news/austin-...
Dr. Pierre R. Berastaín, CEO of SAFE Alliance released the following statement:

"As a result of the recent funding reductions, The SAFE Alliance will be unable to serve approximately 345 survivors this year, meaning fewer households receiving safety planning and stabilization support, and fewer opportunities to intervene before situations escalate into homelessness, emergency medical care, or involvement with law enforcement and the courts.

We recognize that the City is navigating a genuinely difficult fiscal moment, and we deeply appreciate the care with which leaders are weighing these decisions. We will, as we always do, work aggressively to raise private and philanthropic dollars to help offset gaps. But philanthropy cannot reliably replace public funding for core public-safety infrastructure. At a certain point, efforts to stretch limited resources, no matter how well-intentioned, begin to create harm rather than prevent it. When prevention and early intervention are underfunded, those costs don’t disappear; they are shifted into emergency rooms, jails, courts, and crisis systems, where they are far more expensive and far more harmful. The system always collects its debt. The question is who pays, and how much harm happens first."SAFE is not going anywhere. We remain committed to not let survivors face danger alone. If you or someone you know needs help, we are always here for you. Call or message our 24/7 SAFEline for support:
