$Satoru turned his head a fraction, studying Yūta from the corner of his eye. Eighteen was young for marriage, especially for a man in his position. ‘How is Maki faring?’ Her name had an instant effect. Satoru watched as the hard line of Yūta’s lips softened into something approximating a smile. ‘The sickness has been hard on her,’ he murmured, staring down at the dōsojin with faraway eyes. ‘But she’s healthy. She’s happy.’ Heart pounding in his chest, Satoru followed his gaze back to the husband and wife hewn into the rock. The picture of wedded bliss, they beamed up at him as if to mock him. Eighteen was the same age Satoru had been on his wedding day, but his intended was not given the opportunity for happiness. She was not given the chance to grow ripe with age nor round with his children. Suguru bloomed young then fell away from the branch as a fruitless flower. Nay, she was plucked from the branch, snatched from him too soon on this very spot — or so the fools in the village said. Among all the other things Satoru had been deprived of, no one had ever been able to recover her body to confirm it.$

A wintersweet tree laden with snow, blooming in a Japanese courtyard.

In spite of the snow,
Sun bursts on a leafless branch.
Winter blooms sweetly.
In company of flowers,
I think of you and feel warm.

For the first time in a long time, Satoru dreamed of Suguru.

It wasn't Suguru the way he remembered her, softened and sweetened by the passing of time. It wasn't the Suguru who usually appeared to him in dreams, with a face like a thumb smeared through ink. It wasn't a Suguru with someone else's features and it wasn't a Suguru without any features at all.

It was Suguru as Satoru had last seen her, perfectly intact, perfectly preserved, untouched by the ten years that stretched between them. Her skin was white as snow, unblemished by age and hardship. Her hair was black as a deep lake in winter, flowing over her shoulders like cold water.

Her eyes, though, were warm. Her eyes were like sunbursts in her perfect face, gold as the flowers woven into her robes and into her hair.

Satoru had counted many birthdays since Suguru’s seventeenth. When she turned away from him, he wondered if he appeared old and ugly to her, but his sweetheart was smiling as she began to walk the long path to his ancestral home.

Without hesitation, Satoru followed her fragrant perfume.

The road was laden with fresh snowfall, but ahead of him, Suguru floated atop the powder like she weighed no more than a feather. She was a tall woman, yet the teeth of her geta left no imprints in the snow beneath her feet. Where Satoru felt the cold bite deep, Suguru seemed entirely unperturbed by it. Where Satoru was slowed by the icy wind, Suguru seemed quickened by it.

In spite of her tiny steps, Satoru could not reach her on his long legs. The cold carried Suguru away from him, but he knew the path like the back of his hand. He had walked it a thousand times as a boy.

Satoru let her go, taking comfort in the promise of warmth at the end of the journey.

Soon, she would have him in her embrace at last.

The path to the Gojō family home looked exactly how Satoru remembered it. It was the road as he had last travelled it, blanketed in fresh snow that climbed almost to his knee. Suguru walked ahead, yet the snow remained perfectly intact, perfectly preserved, untouched by humans and animals alike.

Where it whipped between the tall pines, the icy wind created great drifts, disguising the ditch at the side of the road that carried the snowmelt down into the village in spring. The untrodden powder obscured the stones until one could no longer distinguish between the path and the gaps between the trees.

Dangerous in the depths of winter, Satoru’s father had always told him. Easy to lose the way if one accidentally went astray, he said.

Satoru knew the path like the back of his hand. He followed Suguru’s sweet scent.
