I’m completely thrilled. It’s moose scat! They’re not normally social, but it’s getting close to mating season so they will congregate. I counted 14 separate patties! That’s a lot of animals, including some calves, I think. I set up a camera trap, hoping they’ll wander back through. #moose

I found an oak tree with a dozen of these dry papery balls on it. Turns out they are oak apple galls caused by, wait for it…the oak apple gall wasp. The larvae feed and grow inside the gall and, when mature, chew a hole through which to exit. The last photo shows the desiccated internal supports.

Ugh. Our luck ran out. Smoke’s here. I woke up to a burning throat and ash on my car. I wonder if the smoke composition is different this year because both those smoke effects are new.

It’s been so cold and wet that I only just got the wee woods garden planted. The fence will go up tomorrow. It’s also Lady Slipper season. The yellow ones come and go first and then the pinks. They overlap for a week or two. Ghost Pipe, my favorite, comes up shortly after the pink orchids fade out.

A forest garden plot with potatoes (not up yet), watermelon (an experiment), Brussels sprouts, and a couple tomato varieties.

On my way to a gold panning spot on a wild river. Gear it down, keep the wheels turning, and a Forester will go anywhere. The video compression obscures just how deep those holes are. I couldn’t manage the long hike after the hard drive. It’s too soon and the snow’s still too deep. Soon.
