As I take a break from here, strength for those who are forced to navigate this growing hatred.

In one case, a young man told me that he and his friend (both mixed) had never felt as unsafe as in a recent encounter with white men roaming London’s streets: they looked at us as if they were starving and we were food. Whether you believe it or not, this is the *daily* reality of our lives.

Meanwhile, younger people are forced to learn strategies to navigate life that they might never have felt they needed, and only heard about from elders in outraged astonishment. It’s horrendous and deeply damaging.

Across the country every day becomes yet another risk taken no matter how many steps we take to protect ourselves and beloveds. Steps that might not have been taken for many years, but which come back as a kind of muscle memory for those old enough.

A thread of what life is like for anyone these groups dislike, usually by existing in our own skin. The threat has always been there, but it’s escalating and endangering ever more lives as so many either look away, or even embolden this hatred and violence.

This is an escalation but tbh I really want my colleagues in UKHE to realise how increasingly unwelcoming the country has been for international students over the past decade. From my own experiences alone, I could not in good conscience recommend students come to the UK without serious caveats.

These really are remarkable books. I could add so many more, such as Bathsheba Demuth’s Floating Coast, Amitav Ghosh’s In An Antique Land, and more. These are books that have kept me company, or helped me think about how to write differently as I wrote my roar in private.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

PSA: if you don’t want AI on your Apple devices, think carefully about the latest update to iOS. The option to turn off AI with a single global option has been removed. There are ways to minimise it with multiple things turned off, but not to turn it off completely as before. It’s infuriating.
