To celebrate all the recent love for #Hoi and #MoonChild, I fired up @aseprite.org to create some new Hoi and MC pixel art, for the first time in ± 30 years. 😃💚 For the scenery, I used my tiles for the Amiga version, combined with the Windows version's mountains and night sky background.

i think i might start streaming this a few hours from now. i did get something hacky working to allow simultaneous display of the english dialog but it's not gonna be perfect for mildly-spaghetti code reasons. i expect it'll ~90% work though which is good enough for me

since i have been streaming playing games in japanese & i just finished deltarune ch.5 in english, i wonder if i should stream ch.5 in japanese in a few hours? dunno how exciting it would be really. i wonder if i have some way to be able to show the english dialog at the same time as the japanese

to be honest, i'm really surprised that the nightstar is basically a whip, but mina doesn't swing it like one. if the nightstar's attack could hit nearby enemies above/to the side of you because of its animation or motion, it would help its usability a lot IMO.

the extra shock hit upgrade is also a little wacky because hitting a solid surface forcibly retracts your whip, preventing you from using the shock. you have to be way more careful about some enemies/room layouts than other weapons have to because of this

the game's collisions & visuals don't match up super well, either. sometimes the range to hit a tipper visually looks like hitting the empty air under a boss's raised arm. if you got a little closer to match what the visual actually looks like, you wouldn't ever hit a tipper

the tipper upgrade is too precise for the game IMO. you don't have a real way to keep enemies at a precise spacing, so it's easy for them to stay too close to tipper. most enemies also lunge at you from outisde of the nightstar's range anways, so its extra range is of questionable utility

completed mina the hollower new game+5 with the nightstar (whip). i thought it felt okay at first, but it falls off hard IMO. it seems to be the only main weapon lacking a practical way to hit diagonally or to your side, which really sucks when most enemies can attack you from any angle

my first one took me 20 hours, it seems like the subsequent ones have been 10 hours (there is a series of new game plus modes you can do, not sure when it caps out yet)

on the other hand, nox's bayou and astral orrery are pretty fun. astral orrery is just solid & creative platforming for the most part. nox's bayou i like mostly because it has the most spots where you can use the fishing rod to do minor sequence breaks

honorary mention to the purple bouncy things in bone beach. massive collision box that makes it a pain in the ass to attack or even walk near them. for bonus points, you also can't jump over them, which makes it 2× as confusing when you bounce off them while being visually too far away on both axes

after 4 playthroughs of mina the hollower, IMO septemburg is the least fun area by far wind is annoying for a lot of small reasons (why does it affect you underground…?), but the lightning is awkward to understand & doesn't play w/ any of the other challenges in a fun way, especially the carving man

now i think i've got myself stuck in a dungeon intended for later in the game. regular enemies do enough damage that it sucks to explore, so i'm gonna start leveling up again, which will make me overleveled for the dungeon(s) i was supposed to do before this one! help where is my flow state

started playing mina. irritated that it could be way more fun but inexplicably has leveling up & the dark souls money death thing whatever you call that. without trying, i think i ended up overleveled for the intended first two dungeons. that's despite spending a boatload of bones on other things
