I'm sorry. How come?

That said, I think that copyrights shouldn't last longer than 2-5 years (which extenuates AI). Anything beyond that is hard to justify in terms of cost for society versus benefit for workers.

A problem small game developers face is companies quickly cloning and rereleasing their work. If *everyone* could just do that with the original files, for free, it probably wouldn't be great lol. De facto, people can already freely pirate any game, so copyright is only truly relevant to sellers.

When you are hurt, the low-level interpretation of said stimuli is thought to bubble up and be consciously interpreted, sometimes as words, which feed back into the low-level interpretation. My naive question is: why could this not be the case for thinking?

Interesting. Is it possible to roughly gesture toward how this view accounts for apparently wordless thoughts that take the thinker time to phrase? If so, how does this theory explain that? I'm familiar with surprisal/predictive coding, but that equally applies to sensations.

Yes! Difficulty discourse often pits accessibility against the designer's vision, but the same sequence can have a very different emotional effect on people of varying skill. Another thing that's neglected is that many games intended to challenge are actually too easy for some, ruining the mood.

I think we're changing it just by existing haha. Just by doing things we're told we're not supposed to do. I'd like others to be able to do that too. At the very least, we shouldn't stand in their way.

Ultimately, transmisogyny is rooted in the enforcement of gender roles, so I think weakening their sway is the best way to combat it.

You describe gender as it is, but we made its social aspects, we can remake them, and I think we should. One's actions should not dictate which social caste they fall into. Rather, social castes ought be self-determined and only ever as meaningful as the individuals involved would like them to be.

You're right that transgender women are often pressured into conceptualizing themselves as men, especially now, so I understand being wary. It just strikes me as troublesome to reinforce the lines between categories that many people strain against.

I think there's something to that, but to be fair, indicating your intent to play tit-for-tat in a massively multiplayer offline prisoner's dilemma at least has some chance of changing the calculus. Long shot, but worth trying.

I don't know. I'm not particularly into feminine clothes, but I'm still a woman. I think it works the other way as well. Like, cisgender butches exist, so why not cisgender femmes who happen to be men?

Given that graphic designers report losing clients left and right I'd be surprised if it were otherwise.

There's something to that, but to be fair, I get the feeling few people see mining coal as their raison d'etre. Art rarely pays well but folks are happy to be able to dedicate time to it. If it's no longer their job then that time must go elsewhere. Jobs whose only worth is good pay are fungible.

Agreed. I think that the public won't care, and that we'll eventually realize we've once again torched the commons. Keeping things as they are isn't optimal, but it's too early to say AI can indefinitely come up with new material across domains. Correctness isn't always formally verifiable.

Having said all of this, design is still a barrier in many genres IMO. Look to tabletop games. Encoding the rules isn't exactly the challenge, but people like Vaccarino still stand tall. People can release playable games and flood the market, but I don't think most of them will be very good.

If I am right then one way developers might set themselves apart is through complexity. Just as large studios compete via expensive spectacle, so could smaller developers set themselves apart from non-programmers by doing things they're unlikely to manage. Whether this is a good is questionable lol

I do think you are at least partially right, though. Small, simple games might avoid the degradation issue. Or, the ability to release a buggy game with minimal effort will flood the stores regardless, making life much harder for genuine developers.

LLMs seem to do very well at greenfield projects, but as code accumulates, there is a steady degradation in ability. If you are virtuous and always read and edit the code yourself then that can be averted, but that's not something you can do if you've never learned how to program.

Sable Zobel @sablezobel.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Could be, but I'm not so sure. I have a friend who spent a long time using LLMs to refine a non-game project. Works in cybersecurity, so he's no stranger to writing software. It certainly drastically accelerated development, but by his own admission, the codebase is now bloated and hard to wrangle.

At the limit, yes. Think "I'll never have children" versus "Nobody will ever have children". If there is aura/romance to the pursuit of a craft then it's sad for that to vanish. People who write tend to like the idea and narrative of people writing, and so on across intrinsically motivating fields.

That said, if whatever inevitably replaced me was conscious, I'd probably be a bit less sad haha. Assuming all of the other issues were solved, of course.

As of now there are all sorts of practical arguments to be made against image synthesizers (e.g. they might drive artists out of business and then stagnate because synthetic data isn't good enough), but I think it goes beyond them. People are just horrified by losing their reason to be.

I think that the copyright argument is mostly what people reach for to explain why it's bad that employers will happily replace most working artists with machines given the chance. If you built some hypothetical program that derived art from first principle I suspect that it would still be opposed.

If sci-fi is allowed, neurosurgical personality adjusters. Would be great to just increase my discipline, but even ignoring the obvious coercion-related horror scenarios, I think people would very quickly transform themselves in ways that, given foresight, they'd never want.

Absolutely, and I say this as someone who is vaguely aligned with market socialism and is not a fan of the impact of AI on society. This is the same regime that banned abstract art. That decried the "rotten intelligensia". Beyond the economic benefits, they'd see devaluing intellectualism as a plus!

How so? To me it looks like tit for tat. Whether you agree with the premise or not, people commonly perceive the process of training AIs as theft, and so as defection. Now, tit for tat with forgiveness is optimal, but for that to happen trust-building *actions* are needed first.

I'm a hater, but yeah, this is my position. It's sad that corporations will giddily replace most working artists with machines, the impact of that on culture won't be great, but factory farming is so much worse.

Very zen haha. In my view life's drama is what gives it meaning. A story with no stakes, where the protagonist's existence does not matter, is quite boring to me.

Imagine a world where there is nothing you can offer to another human except your humanity You can do anything you'd like, but nothing you do is necessary, because a machine can do it better. Even friendship, love, parenting. Would that not depress you? People like to feel needed.

Honestly, sans the metaverse angle and the ties to Unreal, I kind of like the function annotations haha. It always bothered me that we have type safety for arguments but not for what you're allowed to do in a given function. I hope someone rescues the language from Timworld one day.

This is anecdotal but my impression is that it's a net negative when used to generate code. You can do more with less, but the end result seems worse to me. Recent models seem genuinely exceptional at finding security issues, though, so they have their use.

IMO it's boring. The cinematic equivalent of a puzzle game made by a formalist who thinks video games shouldn't have stories or visuals or sound because other mediums did that first. One of the soundtracks is quite good, though, so it can be fun if you treat it as a concert with a video clip.

I think few people dispute that working toward a common goal with diverse groups is desirable. The question is where to draw the line. Increasingly, I think we made the opposite error. We tolerated fascism into mainstream media, into the halls of power, and it won't extend the same favor back.

IMO TCGs are about these decisions so it's really cool that you invested in getting this right. So many games have marvelous systems but never bother to teach the computer to use them. I'm sure it'll pay off. 3/3
