Pretty ballsy of #Wikipedia to headline their latest call for donations with "We owe you an explanation". They do indeed. I expected them to explain why they fired a worker for unionizing, but the rest of the banner just goes on to explain what day it is and how donations help their operation.
Green wikipedia funding banner. The headline reads " We owe you an explanation", followed by no explanation of anything except why they are asking for money.

"You deserve an explanation, so please don't skip this 1-minute read. It's Saturday, 6 June. Our fundraiser won't last long, but fewer people are seeing our message this month and we might not hit our goal. If you've lost count of how many times you've visited Wikipedia this year, we hope that means it's given you at least 20 kr. of knowledge. If everyone who finds Wikipedia useful gave 20 kr., we'd hit our goal in a few hours.

It's been 25 years and Wikipedia is still free. It's still created by people, not machines, and we don't run ads or put up paywalls because we're not here to make a profit off your attention. In other words, it's still the internet we were promised.

Less than 2% of our readers donate, so if you've never given and Wikipedia has provided you with at least 20 kr. worth of knowledge, donate today. If you are undecided, remember any contribution helps."

Crazy stats indeed - I thought for a second Last Week Tonight's episode on Twitter had somehow caused another mass influx, before realizing the timeline didn't add up. Still nice to see the network is bigger than we thought, and that the decline in users over […] [Original post on hostux.social]
Monthly active Mastodon users reported by fediverse observer the last two years. The current estimate is the same as the one given for March 2024, after which a sudden drop followed by a sleek decline of users was observed.

There's a lot of talk about Google AI's capacity for misinformation, but one has to at least give it credit for its honesty.
Screenshot of a Google search: "why should one not use google search"

Result:

One should avoid using Google Search primarily due to significant privacy concerns, including tracking user data, location, and search history, alongside declining search quality, such as an increase in AI-generated, SEO-manipulated "slop" and advertisements. Furthermore, Google creates a "filter bubble" that can limit the diversity of viewpoints.

Reasons to stop using Google Search include:

- Extensive Tracking and Privacy: Google tracks your location, search history, and online behavior, even if you clear cookies. Google Analytics is used on a large percentage of websites, allowing them to monitor users behind the scenes.
- Declining Result Quality: Many results are cluttered with SEO-driven content, AI-generated "slop," and excessive advertisements, often requiring users to search for "Reddit" to find authentic, human-generated answers.
- Data Exploitation: Google collects personal data to feed its, or its partners', ad-targeting algorithms.
- Filter Bubbles and Bias: The algorithm personalizes results, which can create a "filter bubble" that limits exposure to diverse information or viewpoints.
- Monopoly Concerns: Google's dominance stifles competition, and its market power makes it difficult to find unbiased or alternative information sources.
- Security Risks: Over-reliance on a single, massive ecosystem increases risks, such as those related to data-sharing practices and tracking.

Mastodon migration by @Ullilust Original post: mastodon.social/@Ullilust/114086756… @fediverse
A short comic consisting of two frames.

The left shows five birds standing on a brown hairy surface. They are engaged in conversation:
- "I feel safer here."
- "Yes. This provider doesn't want to steal my artwork."
- "Doesn't collect data about me."
- "Isn't this a bit more uncomfortable?"
- "Comfortable enough, I'd say"

The right panel pans out, showing that the birds are standing on the back of a mammoth/mastodon. They are situated in a field full of other grazing mastodons, along with other mammals.
