"Interview Analysis With Cognitive Maps" by @s-dornschn-elkink.bsky.social - This article demonstrates how cognitive mapping can advance the study of reasoning, not as an abstract process but, in a systematic analysis of transcripts & everyday language. psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...

New article on “Interview Analysis with Cognitive Maps” in #Qualitative #Psychology: The piece shows how cognitive mapping reveals the reasoning behind people’s words - turning interviews into structured stories of belief, inference, and decisions. doi.org/10.1037/qup0...

Positive contact dominates Jewish–Palestinian interactions in mixed Israeli neighborhoods. Even in conflict and war, research suggests everyday interactions are often more positive than commonly assumed. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

15 years after the Arab Spring: why did people protest then, but not now? Hot, hopeful emotions spark protest. Cool safety concerns keep people at home. Hot Contention 👉 bit.ly/hotcontention @academic.oup.com @ucdpolitics.bsky.social www.almendron.com/tribuna/its-...

Everyday opposition in authoritarian settings shows that people neither fearfully endure nor loyally support the regime. Now out in Handbook on Opposition Politics, edited by O’Malley, Cavatorta, and Baturo: doi.org/10.4337/9781... DM me for a copy of the chapter.

The U.S. warned Iraq not to pick its PM. Iraq did anyway. Arab Barometer data from Iraq provides context: U.S. favorability is low (28%) and declined 7 points between 2022 and 2024. In the meantime, favorability toward Iran increased from 24% to 34%. www.arabbarometer.org/media-news/a...

The next session of Psychology of Resistance Virtual Meetings is next Monday, December 8: We do a Talk (15 mins) & Discussion (30 mins) session with Samaher Yehya on Palestine solidarity actions (morals, community, and diverse tactics) in the Netherlands To register: tinyurl.com/morals-comm
Title: Morals and community as influences on collective action in light of repression among young adults in the Netherlands: A mixed-methods investigation
Presenter: Samaher Yehya
The rich literature on collective actioninfluences has examined these factors inisolation. Thus, the question of how differentsocial, contextual, and individual factorsinteract to influence collective action remains, particularly under perceived or actualrepressive contexts. Similarly, the dichotomouscategorization of collective action tactics intonormative (non-confrontational) and non￾normative (confrontational) collective actionremains a significant limitation in ourunderstanding of how different tacticsinterrelate. This study implements a sequentialexploratory mixed-methods design among ayoung sample of individuals active in Palestinesolidarity actions in the Netherlands (a contextthat is not generally repressive butincreasingly more repressive on Palestineactivism) to assess how (1) morals and values,(2) opinion-based identity, (3) relationship withauthority figures, and (4) sense of communityinterplay and influence different forms ofcollective action. Study 1 was a qualitativeinvestigation, with interviews that showcasedhow community and morals counteractparticipation obstacles due to perceivedrepression. Study 2 implemented anexploratory factor analysis to evaluate thefactor structure of collective action tactics, andshowed that moral obligation, perceptions ofrisk, and negative relations with authoritiespredict disruptive and confrontationalcollective action, whereas anger only predictsdisruptive collective action. Perceived riskdeterred any form of participation. Findingshighlight the importance of community inmotivating and sustaining action, even in lightof perceived repression, and the need to gobeyond a binary understanding of collectiveaction tactics.

The Irish government lets refugees spend nights in cheap tents. This is inhumane treatment of people who spent months or years in dire travel to find refuge in Ireland. Please help by donating to volunteers who provide them all the support they can! www.idonate.ie/crowdfunder/...

After years of war, insurgency, and protest, Iraq’s ruling elites now rely less on force and more on control of state institutions to shape the 11 November elections — turning the vote into an exercise in continuity rather than change.

From a 2022 piece by Gledhill, Shay, & @allardduursma.bsky.social: "campaigns that are more creative, humorous, cathartic, and/or fun are also more likely to be large-scale" civil resistance campaigns bc of the "feelings of empowerment, solidarity, catharsis, or glee that accompany these events."
