Gafrzey--An original Ferrax, its internal chassis mostly intact after a millenium. Time & battle has taken its toll; externals replaced on countless occasions and performance degraded by the centuries. It now guards a backwater with nothing better than beast leather & small metal plates for armor.

Humanoid mecha covered in leather & rectangular steel plates of different sizes. 'Gafrzey, Old Man of the Umber Hills'

Playing with the idea of how repair & maintenance would be conducted by communities lacking in manufacturing capabilites & resources.

Haven't drawn people in quite a while. Evauline Brotmeister, hafling mercenary. An odd career choice for a reputably risk-averse subspecies originally engineered as a game/food animal. For a personal setting.

So it's the usual suspects AGAIN with this new censorship push on Pixiv & Celsys, targeting even mainstream works indiscriminately. (VISA & Mastercard, and likely the Collective Shits from Down Under) A pox, nay, the mark of the devil on the foreheads of all those responsible.

Celsys & CSP have managed to avoid controversy for years, but looks like they've stepped into big doo-doo this time with their obfuscation & scapegoating (possibly due to some retarded UK govt thing). I personally use nothing but default materials so am generally unaffected, but nevertheless...

Just watched the latest ep. of Clevatess, and there's these short sequences that instantly give an uncanny yet familiar feel, whereupon you realize these are actual miniatures being blown up and run through a filter. Incidentally, the director previously worked on a lot of tokusatsu (Ultraman).

A Vessal of the cruder sort oft-seen in the hands of minor realms or exceptional individuals. Constructed from locally-sourced parts built upon a core of critical components made elsewhere & obtained by various means. Crude, yes, but still a war machine of the first order.

'The Unrivalled Scarlet Sun'

On the world of Rux, a Vessal (a portmanteau of vessel & vassal) is one of the pinnacles of Humanity’s achievements, a synthesis of knowledge embodied in a giant humanoid machine with performance that magically scales up with its size --the ultimate expression of the Law of Similarity.

(It's also basically immune to ranged attacks as a side-benefit.)

Thus ends a really good show that, at 24 episodes, had the runtime to properly develop its characters & themes. It's ostensibly an urban fantasy, but take away the trappings & Yuusha no Kuzu fits right into the cyberpunk genre. 1/3

Reading the manga after the show concluded, and the anime was pretty much a 1:1 adaptation...which makes me think this was written as a straight-up satire, wasn't it? Like, every 3 or 4 pages there's someone obligated to say "Amazing!" "Sasuga Noah-sama!"

Thinking of how everyone back then settled on KC's 'CV shipgirls are archers' design paradigm only for KC to do a rug pull afterwards by debuting the first USN CV in the game, USS Saratoga, with a Thompson SMG flightdeck. Subsequent USN CV would all be armed with guns.

Didn't realize there was a Goblin week, how timely. Anyways, an Ostrovian Goblin Boltist, a versatile infantry type whose short stature offers certain advantages & disadvantages. See alt-text for the technical blablah.

Goblin in plate armour & leathers, armed with a repeating crossbow & short sword.

The compound crossbow has a magically-powered motorized screw assembly that gives it a draw cycle of 4 seconds, with mana provided through various means. The helm, cuirass & other steel pieces, manufactory-stamped from bonded steel, are usually worn only when battle is imminent. These are usually painted with a matte rustproofing compound in earth tones to reduce visibility, although some commanders prefer regimental colours or a polished look. Underneath is worn a half-brigandine doublet coupled with the leather gorget suffices for everyday marching wear. The gorget’s raised collar is constructed from cuir bouilli. Cuir bouilli pieces for the legs are often worn when traveling in spite of the added weight as it offers good protection against typical Harshland flora such as bramblewire. Not shown but a woolen poncho, raw or dyed in neutral or regimental colours, is often worn, with or without the cuirass. Natural oils in the wool resist moisture & help protect the armor from rust.

Being technically inclined & of short stature, goblins frequently find employ as boltists.

*Bonded Steel refers to different grades of steel & iron fused together magically to form a solid piece with the desired properties.

This arming doublet is composed of a padded upper half & a brigandine lower half. This is meant to be worn in conjuction with a gorget & short cuirass. Arming points are provided for the attachment of gorget, fauld & sleeves.

The gorget is constructed of buff leather & cuir bouilli with padding on the shoulders as this is meant to be worn underneath a cuirass. The collar is of cuir bouilli in multiple layers.

There's a highly visible trend over the past decade in how dungeons are treated more & more often in JP pop media as exploitable resources/business opportunities, probably due mainly to videogame grinding for mats & drops. Influences go both ways.

Older-style AsGear, uses external frame + servos instead of muscle cables. Simpler & cheaper to build, with well-understood operating principles. However is bulkier, less efficient & redundant, more vulnerable to damage. Should be easy to guess who she's based on.

080

RGG @ryujindx.bsky.social · 29/06/2025

"Shoot that guy." Experimental AsGear in the form of a bodysuit with muscle cables integrated into the weave. Requires extensive custom-fitting as, unlike armor, the wearer's own body has to function as rigid support & anchor points for the musculature.

RGG @ryujindx.bsky.social · 26/06/2025

Just read the latest chapter of Tower Dungeon which concerns Aridellia's circumstances, and it has this fairy-tale quality to it leaning towards the darker Northern European sort. The paneling also has a very storybook feeling, which adds to the tone.

020

RGG @ryujindx.bsky.social · 23/06/2025

Couple of designs for fantasy 'AsGear' powered armor utilizing advanced, 'ribbon-type' muscle cable with a much flatter profile. Left is a fully-integrated harness, right is a composite harness assembled (scavenged) from various sources by the local raubritter from podunksville.

HIgh-performance job where everything works in sync with minimal strain on the body + efficient mana use for virtually zero movement lag. Excellent weight distribution & properly interlocking plates. Comes with climate control.

Mismatched arm & leg components with nonstandard muscle cables require more maintenance to maintain proper synchronization with the wearer's movements. There is a rudimentary load-bearing frame underneath the lamellar torso armor that also serves as rigid anchor points for muscle cables, but it has limited flexibility. The wearer alleviates a number of operational issues by magically enhancing herself, but this comes with its own cost.
