Portland needs an aggressive upzoning around transit stations, one of the easiest things we can do to help TriMet

I’m curious what the current trans pacific traffic levels from PDX because solely on vibes I have to imagine we could support two year round flights to Asia so I wouldn’t think Seoul on KE and Tokyo on AS/JAL would be mutually exclusive

I know they’ve been in discussion with Korean Air for awhile but I’m surprised it wouldn’t be Japan Airlines especially given the news today that Alaska will be joining the Pacific joint venture with JAL and American

Not to mention that we can and SHOULD be zoning for and building far more density in the neighborhoods around yellow line stations, not even just immediately on Interstate

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
We can both cherry pick other cities all day, you’re just not gonna meaningfully attract Vancouver commuters with savings of a couple minutes when driving takes half the time regardless AND you’re making it significantly harder for people already using the yellow line in closer in neighborhoods

I’m comparing stop spacing and train speed with an industry leader
110
Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
More difficult/costly time wise just to save two or three minutes for Vancouver commuters that will probably not make their decision to take MAX on those couple minutes

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The biggest issue as far as time competitiveness goes is that I-5 is just too fast, there’s not enough traffic on it at enough times of the day for it to meaningfully matter. The crawl from IRQ to downtown is truly the slowest part, but I don’t think it’s worth making trips to/in North Portland…
120
Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The 1 line in NYC travels about 8 miles from WTC to 125 St and stops 22 times taking 31 minutes. The Yellow Line from IRQ to the Vancouver Library is about 8 miles, would be 12 stops, and would take under 30 minutes likely. (It’s currently 20 from IRQ to Expo)

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And as @bradleyclover.com pointed out already, half mile stop spacing is in line with industry standards so the issue in competitiveness with driving is just the speed at which is attainable between stops, cutting riders in North Portland in chase of riders in Vancouver just wouldn’t work imo

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
That would very much harm ridership, those stations are contributing about 2000 riders a day to the yellow line. I think that this infrastructure project is second in line to the downtown MAX tunnel, so yellow/orange would be the only thing on the steel bridge and free to run at any frequency
120
Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Not to mention the yellow line is one of our most productive max corridors! Ridership on it is very good and the stops we have now would be even more productive if they received seven or even ten minute frequencies like they deserve

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I mean I get the sentiment but I don’t think we should be throwing away already constructed TOD and first ring suburb neighborhoods with bus/bike connections and the chance for car free living to chase car commuters on the margins to take transit to their jobs that aren’t downtown anymore
220
Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I don’t know about that honestly, maybe Delta Park after it’s extended over the bridge but I don’t know that any other station is a great candidate. I would’ve said Albina/Mississippi but not with the future Low End development in lower Albina

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
In addition to closing off some roads crossing the tracks such as Willamette, Buffalo, maybe Skidmore, you’d only leave a few remaining grade crossings that you could perhaps upgrade with crossing arms or other safety improvements

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
My unpopular opinion is that with all the shitty interchange rebuilds being omnibussed into IBR, we should be shoving some yellow line grade separations and station rebuilds into IBR as well. Like some targeted MAX overpasses at Lombard, Rosa Parks and Going could be huge.

I said the fact that it’s still gonna take another three years to get this project done, the lead time to just get a more frequent bus with BAT lanes is insane, we should be able to get this done in a couple months! Quit doing more fucking surveys and just get it done!

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

I don’t really have an opinion either way on Frog Ferry but to imagine that it could “rescue” TriMet is absurd

The next major regional transportation measure needs to focus on service levels and speed, not building another street running max line for the sake of it. It’ll need to look like new FX services and infrastructure in every part of the metro and a MAX tunnel downtown as the crown jewel

One thing about speed cameras: they're mainly a tax on people who DON'T live in your city (and also they boost safety *mostly for residents* by changing those people's behavior). Kind of a win-win-win for local government.

ODOT needs to hear from you - do you want the agency to prioritize investments in safer streets, road maintenance and transit restoration next year? I encourage all Oregonians to take this survey: www.cognitoforms.com/ODOT2/ROTVSurv… #orleg

Cops. Do. Not. Have. To. Do. Traffic. Enforcement. You can support speed cameras without letting the cops have unfettered access to data! It’s so frustrating to see people conflating speed and red light cameras with giving cops all your data.

Update from @trimet.org today: Without additional revenue, TriMet's budget deficit will ultimately force the agency to cut in excess of 33% of its total service by 2030 or 2031. This is what a 31% service could look like:
Eliminating 30 of 79 bus lines (38% of bus lines).
Ending weekend service on many bus lines.
Ending service on many bus lines after 9pm.
Shutting down WES Commuter rail system.
MAX frequency goes from 15 mins to 20 mins (3 trains per hour vs 4)
Bus frequent services goes from 15 mins to 17.5 mins.

At least with the Morrison Bridgehead lots, the city already owns those lots, if only they’d tear down the ramps although who knows if that will ever happen

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
From a quick glance at the building size for the Mountain View Ice Rink in Vancouver, it looks like this lot would be big enough for a full sized rink! I always thought that the Morrison Bridgehead or the Regal parking lot across from the Lloyd would be great spots for a rink too

Tom Dundon needs to see Portland at its best. He should start at a Timbers game | Bill Oram
If the new Trail Blazers owner had any interest in understanding the city with which he is at odds, there would have been no better place than Saturday's Timbers game.

Okay call it regional rail though and run it everyday of the week, I don’t necessarily disagree though. However I disagree with Ridgefield, people are moving there and development is happening regardless, if anything regional rail would encourage denser development in the downtown area of Ridgefield

Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
Is there any source with a map for what the capacity is on each section of rail? I’d be curious to know where new infrastructure would be necessary and where it is already sufficient
230
Ryan @ryswoff.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
Throw in a St Johns stop at Lombard, maybe a Hazel Dell PnR at 78th and Lakeshore in Vancouver and I could even see Ridgefield getting behind an hourly commuter rail service
