Cybersecurity Awareness Month, honesty round: what year did you create the password you still use the most? 🔐 Not the password. Just the year. Be honest, 2011 is a vintage, not a security plan. What year is yours?

Austin's best free show is starting: the monarchs. 🦋 Every October the migration funnels through Central Texas headed for Mexico, peaking mid-month. Find a patch of blue mistflower in afternoon sun and wait. Seen one yet? Which neighborhood?

Day three at Zilker, and your charging port has seen more mud than your boots. 🌧️📱 Before you plug in tonight: tap it port-down on your palm, stand it port-down on a towel, wait 30 minutes. 'Liquid detected' means wait, not retry. No rice, no hair dryer.

Sunday check-in, Austin: what number is on your email app badge right now? 📬 Zero is a lifestyle. 14,000 is a personality. No judgment, just the number. What's yours?

Hot take: stop paying for antivirus. 🛡️ Windows and Mac ship with one, and it's good. What gets homes hacked now is a reused password and a text you tapped. A free password manager does more than any antivirus subscription. Fight me in the replies.

Phone prices just went the wrong way. 📱 Google raised the Pixel 10a $100 overnight, $499 to $599, blaming memory chips, which every phone maker buys. Smarter 2026 upgrade: a new battery in the phone you own, about $100. How old is the phone you're reading this on? Photo: Maurizio Pesce from Milan,…

Hot take: your smart TV is the worst computer in your house, and it runs your evenings. 📺 Laggy apps, a home screen that is mostly ads, and it reports what you watch. A $30 streaming stick is faster. Let the TV be a screen. Change my mind.

Longhorns bye week Saturday, and Austin does not know what to do with its hands. 🤘 The brisket still goes on at 6am. The brunch patio still fills by 11. Somebody still yells at a TV showing a game they have no stake in. Red River is in nine days.

Rain moves in tonight and stays through ACL Weekend One. 🌧️ Wet-festival phone kit: a quart zip bag (the touchscreen works through it), earbuds in their case inside a second bag, a battery pack charged tonight, and a poncho (umbrellas are not allowed in). Soaked anyway? Power off, dry fully, then…

Hot take: a smart home that dies when the internet drops isn't smart, it's a rental. 💡 If a Wi-Fi hiccup turns your switches into decoration, every tap asked a server for permission. Thread, Zigbee and Matter gear keeps working offline. Rebuttals welcome: how many of your gadgets survive an outage?

Hot take: the printer is the one device in your house that belongs on a cable, and it's the one everyone puts on Wi-Fi. 🖨️ It naps, forgets the network, and shows up as 'Offline' the night before a flight. One Ethernet cable ends the saga for good. Prove me wrong.

Austin's first cold front of fall is on the 10-day. 🍂 Early next week: highs from 99 into the 70s and 80s, mornings in the 50s, actual rain. Fair warning: the first 58-degree morning will produce puffer jackets, and we will all pretend that is normal.

Cedar fever gets the headlines. Ragweed is the opening act nobody bought a ticket for, and it peaks this week. 🤧 That sneeze on the trail is pollen, not a cold, and it runs until the first freeze, which in Austin is a rumor until December. Bless you.

Hot take: almost nobody in Austin needs gigabit internet. 📶 300 down streams 4K on three TVs and a video call at once. What makes Wi-Fi feel slow is the 2018 router behind the TV, not the plan. Paying for the big number? Tell us why we're wrong.

If your phone flashed SOS yesterday, that was the big AT&T outage, not your bill. Do this while it's fresh: turn on Wi-Fi calling (Settings > Phone or Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling). Next time the towers stumble, your calls and texts ride your home internet like nothing happened.

Hot take: your smart TV is slow on purpose. The panel is great; the computer inside is the cheapest one they could ship, because the apps and the ads are the real product. A $30 streaming stick beats the built-in menus every time. Wrong? Tell me why.

Hot take: most Austin homes paying for gig internet would never notice a drop to 300 Mbps. A 4K stream uses about 25. What you actually feel all day is Wi-Fi coverage, not plan speed. Fix the dead zones, downgrade the plan, keep the difference. Tell me why I'm wrong.
