This is another fantastic example of the ongoing work that demonstrates why chronic illness/disability is a full-time job. Overlapping “business hours” of phone calls required to resolve copious insurance coverage/billing issues poses a huge barrier for patients trying to work typical job hours.

Many hours of phone calls between insurance company & providers have helped to uncover billing code errors from providers or a wrong box being ticked on insurance end preventing proper coverage. After an issue is identified, it can be resubmitted to resolve billing errors & receive proper coverage.

US health insurance companies bank on you not knowing or taking the time to call and put in the hours to appeal bills, which takes them off the hook for having to pay. If insurance actually does not cover it, it could be better to go the self-pay route since that may cost less than using insurance.

I am owing the Internet a port-a-cath update soon. We solved the problematic port pain issue! TLDR: Chloraprep allergy + MCAS - switched to iodine for sterilization 🙏 Will share more details later in case others may encounter similar obstacles. We had to experiment to figure it out on our own.
