So I know there are ads on my podcasts this week because I opted into my host's new dynamic ad service. And I specifically told them no AI ads, which they ignored. Please don't use any AI service you hear about on there, because I actively do not endorse any of them and hope they all implode.

It's wild to see Highguard go from launch to shutdown inside of six weeks. This is also why external consulting services are valuable -- a company like mine would have helped a game like this avoid a fate this dire. There is no reason this should have happened. www.gamesradar.com/games/fps/hi...

Highguard will "permanently shut down" next week after "one final game update," dev confirms: "We have not been able to build a sustainable player base"
"Servers will remain online until March 12th"

I don't know when it took place, I am assuming over the summer of 1936. I was just considering the distance from the year itself.

16,234 days between Dec. 31, 1936 and June 12, 1981. 16,241 days between June 12, 1981 and today.

We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

Me, in 2025, seeing Tony Hawk tell you about the cholesterol pills he takes, watching Christina Ricci hawk anti-aging skincare products, and and hearing "Take On Me" used for the jingle in a medication commercial.

There's also the fact that getting diagnosed as an adult involves a months-long waiting list and multiple thousands of dollars. So, even if you suspect, do you really want to jump through those hoops -- especially if you've been living a functional life this whole time?

RIP Michelle Trachtenberg, dead at 39 from apparent liver transplant complications. This one hits hard. Younger than me, super out-of-the-blue. Tragic. The very first episode of Buffy I ever saw was S05E02, the first one featuring her in the opening credits. www.yahoo.com/news/buffy-g...

I do not need to "save time" or "see more features and enhancements over time" or "Learn more." What I need is a "Please disable Gemini and stop asking me about it forever" button.

I know everybody is all about Astro Bot and Metaphor: ReFantazio and Elden Ring DLC right now. But you're probably sleeping on Vengeance Hunters, one of the low-key coolest arcade beat-'em-ups since Streets of Rage 4.

An observation, in the midst of setting up a new PC and also refitting the older PC as an upgrade for my wife's computer: All programs should have an "export settings" option, so that you can just import preferences from a file, instead of playing Where's Waldo with settings screens across two PCs.

Blue Revolver is one of the best and most newbie-accessible arcade shoot-'em-up games there is, if you're curious about this genre and want something good to try.

Man, so, for real: I've gotten super-used to just not having Twitter-y social media in my life, after I walked away from Elon Musk's garbage pit. So now I have to actively remind myself it's here, since I don't just sit on it all day. I hope I didn't forget how to use this thing.

One of the best things I saw at GDC this week was this awesome tribute to Jennell Jaquays, who designed (among other things) some of the best old-school TTRPG dungeons. "Jaquaysian dungeon design" is a thing that's still talked about today.

Sounds like Substack's never heard the Paradox of Tolerance. What a bunch of idiots. I recall the old story where a bartender kicks the nazi out of his bar immediately. If you let one in cuz he's not causing problems, he starts bringing friends, and then suddenly you're a nazi bar.

Sad to hear of the passing of comics legend Keith Giffen, who had a hand in creating some of the funniest and weirdest versions of some of my favorite superhero properties, including Justice League, Suicide Squad, and Blue Beetle. There's never been another comic creator quite like him. RIP.

I'm on some rando mailing list for a site called Hometalk, and they constantly send emails with subject lines like "Pour vinegar in your bedroom" and "Hang PVC pipes on your porch" and "Rub a bar of soap on your door." What are we trying to do here, ward off the Blair Witch?

Hah, this is the core issue I've been expressing for a while. The whole "superhero fatigue" thing is not a tonal issue, it's a quantity issue. There is too much of it, the solution is to MAKE LESS so it feels like an event again, and not another perfunctory thing being churned out.

Sad to hear of the death of Arleen Sorkin, the original voice of Harley Quinn (who first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, and is now one of DC's most recognizable and bankable characters). Everyone else: If you aren't doing an Arleen Sorkin impression, you're voicing Harley Quinn wrong.

I mean, CBR was already a clickbait-focused content mill before this, and these people should be deeply ashamed and embarrassed that most of their work is basically indistinguishable from AI, going back years. But, you know, good to take a stand, I guess?

Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino are like straight-off-the-assembly-line megacorp CEO supervillains from a Shadowrun campaign. Man, cyberpunk was a lot more fun when it was a speculative fiction genre, and not real life.
