The time we got him help, they gave him lithium at an extremely high dose and he was even more manic, which he was still then able to lie his way out of the hospital on. The breakdown following was several days long and traumatic.

We tried and told the truth to every physical doctor yet he lied to every psychiatrist, to get out of the hospital and off the 5150 before they could even notice the difference in stories and personality.

This led to a massive breakdown over several hours, then him calming down enough to explain he had a plan to move in with his brothers and he left, he decided to leave in underwear and barefoot then sent an officer to collect a suitcase full of his items. Turns out there wasn’t a plan at all.

It has worked in the past and been acknowledged and discussed thoroughly in sound state of mind by him. That was within the last several months, within the last week he has been in a sort of episode from his brain injury and mental illness, again which he has refused to treat.

He refused and even ran from hospitals we took him for physical help and treatment, which led to him getting literally abducted and worse. We sought treatment for both physical and mental for him, and he wanted therapy then continuously disregarded the idea.

Over the last half year, there were near-daily breakdowns, episodes, and crises. The rest of the Pack carries physical scars, injuries, and lasting pain from those moments. Our home was kicked, slammed into, damaged, and cracked during these incidents. We did not hold that against him.

The positions we used stopped us from hitting our heads, scratching ourselves, punching, kicking, slapping, throwing things, destroying objects, or running into traffic. We used our own bodies and waited for the storm to pass. That was always the goal. Safety.

Because of those experiences, we took safety very seriously. The goal was never punishment, control, or hurting him. The goal was preventing injury, preventing self-harm, preventing destruction of property, and preventing anyone from getting seriously hurt.

Those safety concerns were never hypothetical. There were previous crises where Tyko left safe environments during episodes and ended up in situations that put him at serious risk of harm. There were also times when immediate action was needed to prevent self-injury.

I have been in similar places myself. Tyko and I had many conversations about that. I know what it is like to be in a state where you cannot keep yourself safe. When situations became dangerous, what our wife did was hold us in positions designed to prevent injury.

Tyko has been through a great deal in life, much of which was not his fault. Those experiences often left him feeling like he had to run. After moving out, he later reached back out. Once we had recovered more as a household, we welcomed him back and flew him to California a second time.
