National Hurricane Center Update: ISAIAS BECOMES A MAJOR HURRICANE... As of 7:20 AM CDT Fri Oct 09 the center of Isaias was located near 27.0, -87.6 with movement NNE at 15 mph. The minimum central pressure was 959 mb with maximum sustained winds of about 120 mph.

Visible satellite imagery is showing a pattern shift developing to our northwest. A front will gradually sag south today bringing a slight chance of showers overnight. Areas of fog and low clouds are also in place this morning along the coast and inland valleys.

The GFS model has changed slightly in terms of forecast lows on Saturday through Monday mornings. Monday now looks to be the coldest morning overall with highest frost potential both east and west of the Cascades.

These are the high end projections for precipitation across the region from late tomorrow through early Saturday morning. We are likely to see somewhere in the middle of these projections of even less for some locations. These are from the NWS in Medford.

Frost and freeze potentials are elevated as we head into the weekend and extending into Monday morning. Make sure you take the time to protect your gardens if you are still trying to limp them along. Harvest what you can as many areas will see temperatures cold enough to kill or damage plants.

Lower level water vapor imagery shows a very dry airmass in place at the surface. This is indicative of a strong ridge of high pressure. The areas in red, orange and yellow are roughly where the ridge is positioned.

The HRRR surface smoke modeling is indicating we will see smoke track south again this evening from the controlled burn on the Umpqua National Forest. Air quality is likely to be impacted for areas where winds direct it. This controlled burn has been occurring the last few days.

With a much colder airmass in place this weekend we can expect to see frost and freeze conditions return east of the Cascades. Even the western interior valleys could see lows cold enough for areas of frost development. This shows forecast lows Saturday and Sunday morning.

Another morning of fog and low clouds along the coast. We are still seeing some mid level cloud cover and a few isolated showers for Northern California, and areas well east of the Cascades as a front tracks to the east. The rest of the region is seeing clear skies.

Water vapor imagery this evening shows plenty of mid level moisture moving across the region. It is still too dry for any precipitation. It has resulted in a slightly cooler and more humid day across the region. Thankfully it kept temperatures from really reaching forecast peaks.

The European model is indicating light precipitation could develop around next weekend. The graphic below shows accumulated precipitation estimated from the 10th through the 12th of October. Cooler conditions are likely to develop by next weekend.
