Apparently libraries are bad for authors. Someone forgot to tell the libraries that have bought nearly 31% of the copies of my book. This week in Life on the Midlist: why libraries matter more to authors than the headlines suggest. mailchi.mp/52fb33e4beea...

This happened nine years ago today. I don't know why our honor attendants looked so repulsed. Happy anniversary, my love.

Everyone defending Columbus has a list of reasons. Strangely, none of them have addressed the didn't discover America, engaged in human trafficking, and encouraged slavery and genocide of it all. So your defense gets removed and you get blocked, of course.

Columbus didn’t discover America. He never set foot on what is now the United States. Know what he did do? Enslave Indigenous people, traffic human beings, and help set loose a campaign of conquest that left entire populations devastated. Some national hero.

A brilliant example of the craft of investigative journalism, from the evidence gathered to the descriptions of the people & places. And then there's the story itself, which is horrifying, but ultimately inspiring. God bless this young woman for persisting. www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

Here's a happier one. Meet the Maskies, Pixie and Nacho. Ferrets are quite intelligent and perceptive, often considered on par with some breeds of cats and dogs, so the Maskies have been showing their support and affection for us more than usual this week.

On This Day in History: October 9, 1959: Yayoi Kusama opened her first solo New York exhibition at Brata Gallery, showing five large white Infinity Net paintings - similar to the red one featured here. In spite of that, it would be thirty more years before she was fully embraced by the art world.

The first ferret we ever rescued, Monster, passed this morning from complications with leukemia and heart disease. He grew up in the basement of our former home where I spent most of my days back then. He was my closest non-Elizabeth friend and I miss him already.

On This Day in History: October 4, 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Anne Sexton died at 45. Her confessional writing has been an inspiration of mine ever since learning of her in the late 90s. It's fair to say, while we are very different, there would be no me if there had been no Anne Sexton.

I’ve traveled 689 miles on book tour so far and learned something mildly irritating: The elaborate presentations I spent ages building are not the best events. Sitting down with another interesting person and talking is. First leg down. Three to go: mailchi.mp/eda2d2b43e11...

On This Day in History: October 3, 1908 Edvard Munch entered treatment in Copenhagen after years of heavy drinking and declining health. These images trace the shift that followed from the darker, inward work before treatment to the brighter color and livelier energy of his sober years. #EdvardMunch

On This Day in History: October 2, 1968 Artist Marcel Duchamp died unexpectedly. His works sparked a GIANT conversation about what art could be. We live in a world where the line between artist and idea is constantly shifting. That world didn’t build itself. Duchamp helped clear the ground.

On This Day in History (Probably): September 29, 1571 Michelangelo Merisi, later known as Caravaggio, is born in Milan. This Italian painter pioneered techniques that are still in use in a number of creative disciplines today - and he also killed some people. It was a real mixed bag. #OnThisDay

I hope I'll be a position to give more focus to my next manuscript, but, to some extent, that will depend on how much progress we've made toward my publisher's unit sales goals. I've learned a ton about balancing the creative and the commercial and it's definitely tricky.
