Exploring the Grand Unifying Architecture of Frontend

I've finally been able to put all frontend solutions on the same grid by recognizing them as a product of 2 axes and 3 core responsibilities. HTMX, LiveView, RSCs, islands, SPAs, Sync Engines... None express what another can't. They differ in efficiency and ergonomics. 👇

I still find it crazy how we are still discovering primitives that completely collapse decades of carefully crafted imperative code. Part 2 is probably more impactful as a live demo. But picture it paints is still very powerful. www.solidjs.com/blog/async-s...

Solid is a purely reactive library. It was designed from the ground up with a reactive core. It's influenced by reactive principles developed by previous libraries.

Hmm..that sounds aggressive. I know React is the most popular framework but it isn't the only framework. Vue also prefixes with `use`. I wonder if we need to isolate stuff similar to JSXImportSource..

This is a cool demo right? I like collecting things SolidJS does that others don't but I'm not sure they matter to everyone. In SolidJS JSX is just a DOM element so nothing stops you from moving it around (it can only be inserted into the DOM in a single location). stackblitz.com/edit/solidjs...

My typical demo follows a formula. 1. Present a problem 2. Lead the audience to a simple solution 3. Show the simple solution doesn't work (in today's tools). 4. Spend significant time fixing 5. Show same simple solution in Solid, but it works AI throws a wrench in this.

I've seen talk of AI removing the need for frameworks. As an author using AI to assist writing, it feels we aren't there. Trying to debug/fix framework code without introducing regressions is non-trivial. To think app code isn't going to be missing edge cases is fanciful.

Async in frameworks happens in 4 phases: 1. create 2. consume 3. block 4. read The problem? Most fuse 2 & 3. Consumption triggers blocking. This puts DX (coloration) at odds with UX (blocking). Solid 2.0 snaps them to the poles. Colorless logic. Non-blocking UI.

I just really like JSX. I don't mean the syntax. I mean that it has no set semantics. Just a grammar you can use as you see fit. There are some limitations on syntax/symbols etc.. but I can make `bind:myproperty={something}` do whatever. Most tooling is reasonable. Even if it was made for React.

I've been looking at `html` tagged template literals again and man the state of things sucks. I'd be so happy if @developit.dev `htm` was the accepted format and we could just get typing going, but as usual there are competing standards and in a lot of ways it makes sense.
