The early 2000s were a more innocent, fartier time.

I think fiery chuffs must have been all the rage in the early 2000s. Hear'Say were at it as well.

Rich Hall's unfinished novel sounds amazing.
A screengrab of text which reads:

It's about my dog being dognapped. I'm on the toilet with nothing to read, reading the laundry labels on my sweatpants in all these different languages. And one of them says: 'We have your dog'.

It becomes this very convoluted story about how the dog's been taken to Vietnam for a religion that worships Confucius, Jesus and Victor Hugo. Somehow, the leader of the religion makes his living writing laundry care labels. So I have to track my dog to Vietnam and get caught up in a cult. It gets crazier and crazier, a shaggy dog story. Except the dog isn't that shaggy.

Here to report that slopvertising has hit my nearest town. This could easily be a viral poster for a horror movie. CC @doctorow.pluralistic.net
An advert for a place called Anna International Supermarket, plugging what it rightly terms 'Shock offers!'. There's a grid of nine products, all but two of them are for cuts of meat ('Whole Lamb', 'Half sheep') that look like props from Eraserhead. The other two products are 'Oli' (a massive magnum of sunflower oil) and 'Tamata paste' (a tin of passata). The whole thing was clearly dredged from the third circle of hell with generative AI.

I highly recommend this piece about the cult-like attitude to AI in certain companies. This bit in particular jumps out. hermit-tech.com/blog/ai-mani...
These mandates have led to extremely strange places. Several of my peers now “AI-wash” their work, meaning that even when they can perfectly competently execute on their jobs to the satisfaction of their management teams, said managers are unhappy if the engineers haven’t used AI in the work… so now they’re lying about using LLMs even in contexts where their professional judgement is that they aren’t the appropriate tool. They just do the work, the same way they have for decades, and say Claude did it.

Thoughts and prayers for the gen-AI users frustrated at the rising cost of tokens...
A screengrab from an advert on Facebook for an AI product that turns prompt into video. An angry comment beneath reads:

How many credits does that chew up. Plenty I bet. Unlike the other version I hope not. I spent $100 to get 1/4 of my timeliness so had to give up. The problem here is you don't know how many credits you need till you are committed to the project. Then it holds you to ransom.
And if you aren't satisfied with the result, it costs more to rectify it. Turns into a money pit. The positive thoughts is I could extract what I had and use it to build a storyline for a slide show. Happy creating my worldly citizens ! !
