But also, and this is the bit that has me equal parts baffled and enraged, those same promoters are deeply shocked that people don’t want their lives ruined. Like, it never even occurred to them that this was something anyone would mind

Not only is the detail level better, but it takes primer and paint better than pewter ever did.

Also, shouldn’t discount the impact of certain types of people pumping money into this sort of crackpotery. “If you’re willing to associate with this, you’ll be guaranteed funding“ is very effective. Sometimes those who write history (Or “science”) are the ones who can afford to eat more than Raman

I think this is clearly a situation that justifies them pulling out all the stops. Going right to the wall. “Fuck you, make us”, on every level Yes, the province CAN make them. Can remove city council’s authority, or even city council. But if you roll over and comply, hasn’t that happened already?

I‘d quibble a bit about Dreeshen’s view. It’s not that cities don’t provide services to the rural areas around them, which is true, but in Dreeshen’s thinking that’s their only purpose.

Same reason that some of the people I’ve encountered with the strongest opinions against Edmonton’s bike lanes are people who only drive into the city every month or two for shopping.

Ryan @ryanhumphrey.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Because the driving force is rural and suburban right wing voters who actively hate the large, progressive, cities. This is simply an avenue to attack them The people pushing these policies aren’t going to be directly affected by them.

Is there any standard for what ”consultations” require? could council respond by just rubber-stamping everything?
110
Ryan @ryanhumphrey.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Except this isn’t a ”Dems are weak” joke, it’s a “The Dem establishment inevitably pivots to consultant-brained ideas that cost them authentic support” joke.

This is honestly such an incredible overreach on the part of the province that council should force them to replace them before they comply

Something I heard a number of winning candidates say is that, in terms of issues people raised when actually door knocking, infill was barely a blip Yes, there’s hundreds, and even thousands, of people passionately opposed, but we’re a city of more than 1m. The news can always find an angry person

Just the one? Omelas truly has the greatest of universities

Ryan @ryanhumphrey.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Which is not unreasonable! Using software and making software are completely different core competencies. It’s the same reason that, for example, trucking companies don’t try and build their own trucks, and photographers don’t start their own sensor fabs.

Partly because our local universities are mostly publicly funded, and we don’t do the crazy thing where they’re act a professional sports team with a university attached Far fewer institutional connections to local politics and donors. No equivalent to the Ivy League system.

That’s complicated by the fact that we’re not honoring all the treaties *now*. The native rights aspect, and how it’s tied up with the crown, is a legitimate land mine in any attempt to remove the monarchy.

I‘d be curious to see if any state let their EV’s go against the local winner even once. In practice there’s more than enough time to repeal the legislation between voting day and when the electoral college meets.

Normally I’d agree with you, but the novelty of having something Quebec actually wants to cooperate on, constitutionally, might be enough to get it done.

It would be the sort of right wing that right wing voters pretend is what attracts them, so they don’t have to admit that it’s actually the bigotry.

See, I don’t think that can, or should, be separated from the creative vision of the film itself. “I’m going to pretend to make something that people don’t want to see” is a choice It’s like a comedian making their setup deliberately bad, and complaining no one sticks around for the punchline

Ryan @ryanhumphrey.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
“Surprise! This thing you didn’t want to see is actually a thing you want to see” isn‘t actually a workable plan

Without commenting too much on the movie itself, if you want to pull off a successful bait-and-switch, you need a bait that interests the potential audience. They clearly didn’t manage that, regardless of the quality of the actual movie

All due respect to our Atlantic provinces, but if the Ontario Liberals also get wiped out, which is a distinct possibility, I’m going to be comfortable saying they no longer have a provincial wing of their party.

I mean, that’s an entire generation of staffers and operatives out on the street. It’s insane. Scary thought about what happens if a bunch of them end up at loose ends and get really involved in federal politics

Ryan @ryanhumphrey.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Do we take that for granted? in the last couple decades, I think just about every province has seen the total collapse of at least one major historical party. For that matter, the Liberals effectively no longer exist provincially outside of Ontario

It might be a little snarky, but if the Democrats leave the Republicans in a position to scuttle everything every four years, they’re not actually trying to rebuild.

I have zero concern the UCP can actually get Alberta to separate. I have huge concerns that they can destroy the province as a functioning, governable, entity.

I think their ability to smash our country is given way too much credibility by institutions that should know better I think their ability and *willingness* to smash our structures of good governance and rule of law isn’t given enough credibility.

Objectively, Alberta would be the most progressive state in the USA, and it wouldn’t even be close Unfortunately, the current political makeup gives a multiplying effect to the most extreme 10%. You need that 10% to be party leader, but once you’re leader a lot of regular people will vote for you
