“The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Although you make your nest as high as the eagle's, from there I will bring you down,” —says the Lord. Jeremiah 49:16

Reading works by Thomas De Quincey recently. I really love his very personal and vulnerable style, especially in an age where authenticity seems difficult to find. I’ll take flawed honesty over brittle pretentiousness for the rest of my natural life. His sentences are beautiful.

"In Athens such division led to major strife, in our own state to subversion and even deadly civil war - an outcome any responsible and courageous citizen fit for leadership will shun and resist as he dedicates himself entirely to the Republic. He will not pursue riches or power, but will look after the entire state by considering the needs of everyone in it. He will not invite hatred and ill-will against others by spreading false accusations. In short, he will hold fast to justice and integrity, suffering great loss in order to protect them, even - as I have said - preferring to die rather than abandon these principles."

On Duties, Book I (44 BCE)
Marcus Tullius Cicero

"As with legal guardianship, so with governance of a republic: actions should benefit those being cared for, not those doing the caring. Moreover, to consider the needs of only some of the citizens is to neglect the rest and thereby invite the most harmful situation possible for the state, namely discord and sedition. This is how it has happened that so many adherents of the 'popular and 'conservative' causes look after their own side, while few look after everyone."

Tyranny and malice was well-recognizable even thousands of years ago. #reading #books #literature #philosophy
"In general, whoever is going to lead the state must adhere to two principles put forth by Plato: first, whatever the issue, protect the well-being of the citizenry by considering it to the exclusion of your own advantage; and second, look after the state as a whole rather than protecting one part at the expense of the rest."

“The reason why these disasters have descended upon us is because we chose to make ourselves feared rather than liked and loved. And if this could happen to the entire Roman community, because of its unjust imperialism, what lesson should individuals draw for themselves?”

“Surely, then, our present sufferings are all too well deserved. For had we not allowed outrages to go unpunished on all sides, it would never have been possible for a single individual to seize tyrannical power.”

You’re sure to find something beautiful.
Earth of departed sunset - earth of the mountains
misty-topt!
Earth of the vitreous pour of the full moon just tinged
with blue!
Earth of shine and dark mottling the tide of the river!
Earth of the limpid gray of clouds brighter and clearer
for my sake!
Far-swooping elbow'd earth - rich apple-blossom'd earth!
Smile, for your lover comes.

There is no form of legal justice or retribution commensurate with this degree of evil, and the people responsible only pretend to believe in a religion that would rightfully send them to the darkest pits of hell. Dante himself would author an addendum.

These people had protected status. They lived here legally. They worked, they paid taxes. They made lives. Raised families. Now we’ve dehumanized them. Ripped away that protection and told them to get out. This is a stain on the soul of this Nation.

The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness."
