i use ai identification tools like merlin and inaturalist extensively in my naturalist practice, but i feel pretty strongly about there being a proper way to use them to get the best results. read more: ryanmandelbirder.substack.com/p/how-to-use...

i defiantly used this slide at a presentation given last night to a zoom call full of retired people, meant to explain why red crossbills are my favorite bird. i don't care if you've never encountered the most esoteric character from the homestar runner webtoon universe. this is millennial culture
a powerpoint slide titled "introducing: the red crossbill" with two images: on the left a wide character with a simply-drawn white head, two tiny beady eyes, a strong underbite, and a yellow bowler cap wearing a blue shirt that says "homsar" in the bauhaus font. on the right is a red crossbill, a small brick-red finch with beak-tips that cross over one another.

i was so lucky that i got to chase this common cuckoo - only the second ever in the lower 48 - in ny state last week. having never seen a eurasian or african cuckoo species before, i couldn't believe how big and conspicuous it was—cuckoos are mostly shy and hard-to-see in the western hemisphere.
a gray hawk like bird with thin stripes on its tail and back and white flecking on its face but with a thin slightly downcurved beak flying to the left with wings spread against a field with wooden posts.the same bird perched on the string connecting wooden fenceposts in a weedy field, wings held back to balance, looking right.

i knew that the birdwatching was good in florida but i wasn't ready for just how many and how present the birds would be - birds that i expected to be in pristine habitat would just be in parking lots, street trees, roadside ditches, and vacant lots 🦉
a yellow throated warbler, a small black and gray and white bird with a yellow throat, in a live oak. i photographed this bird in a parking lot. a snail kite, a slate gray raptor with an orange beak and orange feet, sitting in a young baldcypress. this bird was in a city park. a florida scrub jay - a blue jay sized and shaped bird but without the crest, atop a tree. this bird was in a reserve behind a library. a roseate spoonbill - a bright pink wading bird with a long flat spoon shaped beak, across a water feature in a mowed lawn. this bird was in a suburban housing development.

usually when i go on a tropical trip the most memorable thing i see is a bird but on @jerthorp.bsky.social's retreat last week it was the most beautiful fish i have ever seen in my whole life while swimming in a pool under a waterfall

i will be giving an intro to quantum presentation in the colombian tropical forest tomorrow
a slide titled "Quantum birdwatching: quantization and uncertainty"
the left column has two blurry antbirds smeared together with the caption "A one-antbird cloud, spread between two locations"
and beneath that another blurry antbirds with the caption "An antbird with a measured location, but unmeasurable speed"

to the right is text that reads "And there are certain values that can’t be measured simultaneously.

If I measure the exact location of the antbird with my binoculars, then I can no longer calculate the speed.

If I measure its speed with a radar gun, it becomes a cloud diffusing between the possible locations."

worldview totally shattered learning that dunlin should actually be dunlin'
wikipedia text reading "The dunlin (Calidris alpina) is a small wader in the genus Calidris. The English name is a dialect form of "dunling", first recorded in 1531–1532. It derives from dun, "dull brown", with the suffix -ling, meaning a person or thing with the given quality.[2]"

my favorite inaturalist thing is, of course, when years later an expert tells me a sedge i photographed during an inaturalisting spree is actually a cattail sedge, an endangered rarity that i happened to bumble into. AI IDs are nice but interacting with experts is always the best part for me 🧪

my favorite bird pictures are utterly terrible ones that are somehow still diagnostic. a good birder can take a good picture... but a great birder can snap a terrible iphone photo that still manages to capture the essence of a bird 🦉🪶🧪
the ocean with a distant brownish gray seabird with white tail and trailing wing edges. this plumage pattern and shape is diagnostic for antarctic petrel, even though the bird is tiny in the picture.though this looks like the loch ness monster, this blurry picture of a bird head and neck coming out of the water is diagnostic for red-necked grebe because of the gray cheeks, squarish head and thick beak an angular bird silhouette against a blue sky. the shape of the osprey is distinctive with its thick and strongly angled wingsa great horned owls ear tufts coming out of a stick nest in a pine tree

saw a pretty cool bird from my apartment today: a swainson's hawk, who has been returning annually to the exact same brooklyn recycling facility for the past three winters 🦉🪶🧪
a screenshot of text that reads "swainson's hawk / buteo swainsoni / Continuing bird for the last few weeks in this area, and its third annual winter visit since it first showed up in 2023. I have been trying to get this bird from my apartment list for weeks (technically years) but have failed. I figured today would be my shot after michael reported it flying over Green-Wood, but after an hour searching I couldn't locate it, and had to leave for an appointment at 2. At 4:33 i returned to the 25th street R station, came out of the subway and looked up and the bird was basically right over me - long and pointy-winged buteo with a slight dihedral, brownish hood, and mostly unmarked pale rusty belly. I laughed and shouted "F%#! you," which is probably the first time anyone has said that while looking at this specific bird. I snapped an iphone photo and sprinted home, and after just a quick scan caught the bird over the mouth of the gowanus canal. i watched it drift as far south as 28 st and as far north as carroll gardens, centered around the red hook grain terminal. doug g. called me and we watched the bird together, triangulating its position. bird interacted with a red-tailed hawk and a fish crow but mostly just hovered around. a few times it approached an exhaust tower from a plant in red hook and used the thermal to blast high up into the air. bird spent basically an hour hovering around that area.the statue of liberty standing above lots of dense urban buildings and boaty port stuff with a ridge in the background and ikea in the foreground. there is a brown bird-shaped speck above the mast of a boat on the right side of the statue a zoom in on the speck: raptor with a pale belly and dark brown hood and an almost turkey vulture like silhouette a map of the western hemisphere with an orange blob representing "breeding" covering the western half of the united states, a small blue blob covering a bit of argentina just west of uruguay, and yellow stripe connecting them

i'm minnesotan by marriage but i've never been to the famous sax-zim bog (too far from my in-laws). but i'm glad i waited so long, because i appreciated it in ways i wouldn't have before. the 11 owls were a highlight, but so were the mammals, friend encounters, and MN culture 🧪 🦉

until recently they were the same goose and brant is the true barnacle goose taxonomically
The brant was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Anas bernicla.[4][5] Linnaeus specified the type locality as Europe but in 1761 restricted it to Sweden.[5][6] The brant is now one of six species placed in the genus Branta that was introduced in 1769 by the Austrian naturalist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli.[7] The genus name Branta is a Latinised form of Old Norse brandgás, "burnt (black) goose". The specific epithet bernicla is Medieval Latin for barnacle.[8]The brant and the similar barnacle goose were previously considered to be the same species and believed to be the same creature as the barnacle.[8] That myth can be dated back to at least the 12th century. Gerald of Wales claimed to have seen these birds hanging down from pieces of timber, William Turner accepted the theory, and John Gerard claimed to have seen the birds emerging from their shells. This myth arose because in the 1100s the migration of birds was unknown, but it was known that none of these birds was ever seen nesting, nor were eggs found, nor were goslings seen.[9] The legend persisted until the end of the 18th century. In County Kerry, until relatively recently, Catholics could eat this bird on a Friday because it counted as fish.[10]
