Belle won't help them--she traipsed through town singing a mean song about everyone. The town is ruled by an unelected monarch living in a castle with creatures that tried to kill them. No wonder they rebelled against the ruling elites. Poor provincial town, my ass.

Gaston's death collapsed their economy and placed an angry-boy prince back in power. At the celebration ball, none of the townspeople are invited! It’s just Adam, Belle, and all the people who live to serve their every whim. He is living in a bubble of wealth and luxury.

This was leading up to the French Revolution in 1789. Wealthy royal sites ignored the needs of the poor until they overthrew the aristocracy. In the film, the townspeople sack the castle to “kill the beast” of the monarchy itself.

This would have necessitated a vast infrastructure, a network of coops, laying hens, feed, and farmhands. This explains the town's thriving business sector. No wonder the townspeople love him so much–he props up their economy, while the royals collect taxes and contribute nothing

Gaston sings that he eats five dozen eggs a day–which totals 433,620 eggs in his lifetime. This means the town would need to either ship in eggs or keep 333 laying hens, with an avg lay rate of 85% lay rate (like your mom). That's 392 chickens to feed Gaston's protein appetite.

The local economy is thriving, with a large bookshop and luxury goods like tobacco, hats, wigs, and perfume. In particular, we hear that eggs are in high demand–a woman screams for six eggs–because eggs are very high in demand. Later, we find out why:

Now the beast, before his transformation, was likely the prince of a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon–these were distant heirs to the throne that ruled their own mini-provinces. The prince has not been seen for years, and yet the town is flourishing.

At this time, France did have a parliament that was charged with enacting theking's rulings, but they could also veto his reforms that would have taxed the wealthy. This led to Louis dissolving the parliament in 1771, which turned France into an absolute monarchy.

Belle lives in a “small provincial town,” a settlement away from major urban areas or centers of power, in late 18th-century France. Louis XV levied heavy taxes to pay for the Seven Years' War, and tensions with regional provinces–like Belle’s town–were starting to fracture

Gaston’s death crushed the egg economy and caused the French Revolution. Beauty and the Beast is actually about the elite exercising their dominion over the working class–truly a tale as old as time. Let me explain. 🧵

I disagree with Variety’s Supergirl review so much, I actually find parts of it offensive. It’s the first time I’ve never been able to finish reading a movie review because I found it so condescending and misguided.

Hey, uh…you guys know that the Odyssey is a story about a guy being punished by celestial being who don’t fucking exist, right? Like it’s not a piece of historical record—it’s about Greek Batman going on an adventure and meeting dead Superman in hell.

Justice for Sid.

Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
The kid is crazy, give him Meds. So this poor child would gladly accept the medication–anything to block out the sound of Tom Hanks’s voice. So, he overdosed and died young.
130
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
For his entire life, he would have been haunted by the memory of a talking toy, a toy that told him that there are people watching him everywhere. Sid would tell his parents, his teachers, doctors–but no one would believe him.
130
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Sadly, we see our final look of Sid here, in Pixar’s Coco. This is the land of the dead–and that is a skeleton wearing a skull tee shirt–implying that Sid died an early death. I think that the prescription drug use in his early years set Sid down the wrong path.
130
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Unless, that is, their emotional growth is stunted by a talking psychotic toy.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
But Sid’s type of play indicates a child with career objectives in mind–he pretends to be a doctor, and an astronaut. A study commissioned by Genius of Play concluded that 32% of adults claimed the toys they played with as children affected their career choices.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
This kind of psychiatric damage was probably treated with medication–the heavy stuff that sedates a child to kill their sense of whimsy and wonder. Adult Sid makes a cameo in Toy Story 3 here–he’s a garbage man. Now there's nothing wrong with being a garbage man–it was my dream job when I was a kid.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
So then Woody traumatizes this kid for life by speaking to Sid. He is freaked out–and for the rest of his life, genuinely believes that objects come alive–he believes that toys are sentient beings. Think of the long-term consequences here.
150
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Now Sid also likes to blow stuff up…but for a reason. He wants to blow up Buzz to make him fly. Which, by the way, works–that's how Buzz and Woody fall with style to meet up with Andy on moving day.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
See, Sid has no idea that the toys are alive–to him, they are objects, and outlets to express his creativity.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Sid does bully his little sister by taking her to the pretend operating room to perform a double bypass brain surgery. Sid is so smart, he just invented double bypass brain surgery–think what he could have achieved if Woody didn't drive him into a life of hard drugs.
150
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
When he finds Buzz, he’s so excited and says, “A Buzz Lightyear, no way”--because this poor kid just scored the hottest toy in America. This is the best day of his little life.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Sid doesn't have the luxury of owning all the best toys, like his well-off neighbor Andy. So, he has to get creative–he takes his toys apart and mixes them back together. He even turned this toy into a hook-er, get it? He’s got a warped, mature sense of humor.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Let's look closer at Sid's life. His house and backyard are in disarray. We only ever hear his mom, and the poor woman likely struggled to make ends meet, so she can't be attentive to her son. Hell, they even have the same ugly 70s carpet from The Shining.
140
Ryan Arey @ryanarey.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Sid from Toy Story Likely Died of a Fentanyl Overdose. See, Sid was not the villain of Toy Story–remember, he was a child. Yes, we see Sid tear his toys apart, Frankenstein them together, and even blow them up–but does this make him a bad kid?
