Some newsrooms already do this! This is pretty much the reason we were able to get @themarshallproject.org on @standard.site so quickly, among many other CMS improvements. More technologists in newsrooms! You don’t have to let external developers make every product decision for you.
Mamdani’s PIT Crew sounds a lot like how a product team should work: directed groups of experts rapidly prototyping solutions to concretely defined problems anchored in real people’s needs. By doing it internally, he can make sure these solutions are built exactly the way the city needs, build institutional capacity and knowledge, and, theoretically at least, do it far more cheaply in the long run.
As these sorts of civic measures succeed, I think (or, perhaps, I hope) we’ll see more newsrooms translate those outcomes to their own businesses and begin to understand that they need to prioritize technical capacity too. All the same reasons apply here.

You can really see the left-leaning effect of the mail-in ballots now. Pratt's most successful release was via the in-person early vote count. Every mail-in ballot count has been significantly in favor of Bass and Raman.
A line chart showing the percentage of votes received by candidate in each vote release. Pratt's performance has tapered off since election day, with both Bass and Raman doing much better with mail-in ballots. Raman even outperformed Bass today.

Friday's ballot count update puts Raman only 3.3% behind Pratt. Raman gained more votes than Bass this release, who sits at 35%. With half a million votes left to process I think Raman could claim second place by Monday if this trend continues. observablehq.com/@rdmurphy/la...

As expected mail-in ballots are skewing to the left. Bass and Raman have outpaced Pratt in both mail-in only counts so far.

Today's ballot update further closes the gap between Pratt and Raman. Down to 5.9% from 7.1%. Remains to be seen if there's enough juice (AKA votes) left to fully get there. observablehq.com/@rdmurphy/la...

Who confirmed what exactly (because it was not any of the editors of this piece)
Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton will face each other in the November general election to choose a successor to the term-limited California governor Gavin Newsom. Due to the state’s extremely deliberate vote-counting system, it took a bit of time to confirm the winners of Tuesday’s top-two gubernatorial primary. But Becerra and Hilton managed to hold off Democrat Tom Steyer, who spent over $200 million of his own money in the state’s most expensive campaign to date. Becerra will go into the general election as the heavy favorite thanks to the Golden State’s deep-blue political complexion, especially given the national pro-Democratic midterm breeze blowing across the nation.

NYTimes reaching for the word "tranche" way too early in the evening, they need to pace themselves or they'll run out of election cliches
Still, the early data seemed enough to compel two lower-performing Democrats, the former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, to concede shortly after the first tranches of results were posted.

LA County's schedule for tonight's vote releases. We'll get: 1) all the mail-in ballots processed before today; 2) all the vote center ballots cast before today; 3) gradual updates until a semi-final is released with all election day ballots www.lavote.gov/home/voting-...
Reporting Results on Election Night

First Results
8:30 PM – 8:45 PM
Vote by Mail ballots returned and processed before Election Day.

Second Results
8:45 PM – 9:00 PM
Ballots cast at Vote Centers before Election Day.
Ongoing Results Throughout the Night

Results will continue to be updated throughout the evening as ballots cast on Election Day are transported, processed, and counted.

Take Los Angeles’ last June mayoral primary: On the morning after Election Day, the Los Angeles Times’ print headline trumpeted Rick Caruso’s narrow lead over then-candidate Karen Bass; Bass ultimately finished more than seven points ahead of Caruso once all the votes had been tabulated.

“It's not to do with housing, per se,” said Frank Gruber with the Santa Monica Great Park Coalition. “Somebody could say to me, we need 20 acres to build a laboratory that will guarantee that we will cure cancer — we'd still be opposed to it.

Not only stealing, but getting *paid* (well, maybe not anymore) by the very clients they were stealing from
Some of the copied material came from outlets owned by Nota’s own clients. Nexstar, for example, had a $600,000 deal with Nota, according to Nota’s website. (Information about the deal was removed this week.) Poynter found three stories that included reporting from two Nexstar stations.

Ended up getting the "better luck next time" email, at least I'm auto-entered in future draws, womp
Thank you for registering for the LA28 Ticket Draw. Demand has been extraordinarily high, and you were not selected for a purchase time slot in this ticket drop.

The good news is that there will be more opportunities to get LA28 tickets. Additional tickets will be released in subsequent ticket drops, with the next occurring later this year. You will automatically be entered into all future ticket draws for those drops, until you reach the ticket maximum of 12.

If you have questions, our FAQ page is the best place to get clear, up-to-date guidance, and if you haven’t already, sign up for the LA28 newsletter to be notified about future ticket draws.

Thank you for your interest in the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We'll be in touch soon!

"All of our small, cash-strapped news organizations should do a tremendous amount of collaborative technical work, provide access to it for free to the AI companies, and maybe then they will finally take us seriously"
"I propose that news organizations — especially the vast ecosystem of journalism left out of the moguls’ money grabs — create APIs (application programming interfaces) for news. That is, create the keys that would make their news accessible for AI so they can open discussions with the technology companies about the responsible use of their content, branding, links, and, yes, possibly payment.

The big AI companies aren’t going to negotiate with thousands of small outlets, so I suggest that local, independent, and academic publishers gather together to create joint APIs — not to cut off AI, but instead to make it easier to come to meaningful arrangements at scale. Here is an opportunity for small and independent media to leapfrog the moguls, providing news and information to AI’s users and getting attention, branding, and links while the moguls are still blocking, suing, and lobbying."

"The podcast tool’s prognosis was poor, the review concluded: “Further small prompt changes are unlikely to meaningfully improve outcomes without introducing more risk.”

Still, the company’s product review team recommended moving forward with the release, saying it would continue to “iterate through the remaining issues” with the newsroom and would label the tool as a work-in-progress that could generate errors."

Journalism ethics and dental floss have a lot in common…

Everyone agrees both are healthy.
Many of us lie about using them.
Neither is sexy or a hot dinnertime topic.

I live in Los Angeles and was recently in Austin so I'm certainly primed to have come across more Cybertrucks than the average person, but knowing this makes the number of them I've seen in the past month even worse, every one is owned by an early trash adopter defector.com/cybertruck-d...
Screenshot of text: "It's unclear how many Cybertrucks are on the road, and Tesla won't say (masterful gambit, sir), though the number likely falls between 1,000 and 5,000. People who have them now had to sign up years ago, and those who sign up now won't get their cars for another five years or so. Anyone who bought one reportedly had to sign an agreement barring them from selling their Cybertruck within 12 months, or else they would have to pay a $50,000 fine and give Tesla the option to buy it back."

Kevin De León still has a decent lead in the race for the 14th district. (The top two meet again in November.) His share of the vote has been dipping with each new release but not sure if he's in danger yet. The difference between 2nd and 3rd is only 21(!) votes.
Kevin De León is leading the race for the 14th District City Council race with 25.3% of the vote. Ysabel J. Desperately begging journalists to stop describing California’s vote-counting process as slow and to instead recognize how it is optimized for maximizing for voter access. It’s only “slow” to people (and news organizations) who think elections should be a source of instant gratification.
The outcome of many other races on Tuesday's ballot may not be known for days, or even weeks. California's vote-counting process is slow, largely because most of the state's 22 million registered voters cast mail-in ballots, and they can be postmarked up to the day of the election.
