I dream in poetry,
but lose the words
with open eyes
awakening to a cold, dark world.
I lay there, staring—
a blank ceiling glaring
as I seek them—
the ghost of words
at the tip of my tongue.

A new poem. This is for all the children and victims of war and other atrocities caused by weak men.

Pedicide

They’re killing children
Again—
Those weak rich men
Aroused by violence—
Hide their darkest secrets
Under ashes and dust.

School girls seeking
Knowledge,
Living for the future—
The screaming bombs
Silenced their voices—
Forever.

Bloodied books and backpacks,
Pencils broken on the floor—
No longer to write,
To create—
No more songs,
No more dreams.

Children—
Stuck in the middle
Of adult liars,
Broken empires,
And one-sided peace promises
As empty as craters.

When will it end?

More Mountains

There are always more mountains —
Their sun glanced peaks rise,
Looming from a far future horizon.

The cloud-hidden ranges of the past
Fade into memory —
Those struggles far behind.

Between all the ups and downs
There have been valleys of growth,
But also stagnant swamps and complacent plains.

There’s always more work to do —

So, I plant an unsteady foot,
Reach with a bruised, bloodied hand,
And continue up this mountain I climb.

I’m back from my super amazing solo writing retreat! It was awesome. I wrote a lot, explored a lot, and also relaxed. Also, there were chickens! The place a stayed at had a huge garden and chicken coop. It was a much needed getaway. I recommend that every writer do this at least once a year!

We spent the day at the hospital yesterday for my wife. She had some pain causing concern, but everything is okay! So what does a poet do while sitting around? Why they write, of course.

Ode to ER Nurses
Waiting in emergency —
Among the sick and wounded,
The cries of the young
And the last breaths of elders
Whisper prayers of healing
In this temple of Asclepius.

It is a tragedy of delicate order —
Triaged by trauma in astringent air
Surrounded by wheeled beds,
Cabled cords,
Metal trays of implements,
And computer screen glow.
Speakers beck and call
As machines beep a pulse,
A sullen waltz
To the steps and voices
Behind thin veils.

Nurses move in time —
Mythical nymphs in flight
With all the grace of Hygeia,
Aceso, Aegle, and Panacea —
Their stern kindness,
And healing compassion —
A soothing song
Amidst a drama of chaos.

A Poet Dies From Writer’s Block
My poetry plateaued —
Scratching my head,
I stand on the edge
Wondering if wings will grow
When I jump.

My poetry flatlined —
A thin dull tone,
No thoughts in my head,
Waiting for a jolt,
To start this heart again.

My poetry died —
A blue-grey corpse
Lying on cold steel,
The autopsy revealed
No visceral words to be healed.

My poetry’s buried —
Under smoothed soil,
The worms crawl in
To find only despair
And empty bones to bear.

Snow
Deep in winter’s night
When thick snow covers all in sight —
Gently falling giant flakes —
A blanket of peace descends.

The calm quiet hush,
Broken only by a booted crunch —
Soothes a flurry of thoughts
And a blizzard mind.

One of the things I like about winter is that I can go stargazing at 7:00PM. I wrote this one while walking the dogs and staring up at that great expanse. Also, happy Solstice! From here on, our daylight increases as our early stargazing times decrease.

Winter Solstice

As the Solstice dark nears —
Even Sol turns in early
To avoid the frigid cold wind.
Seasonal affective —
She settles down in
Dimming with each passing day.

On Solstice Eve dawn
We light fires to honor,
Candles to encourage —
Hold space to help her rise.
Slowly she appears —
Something we never rush —

Because healing takes honest time.

Her light grows and grows
As our glowing love does —
Warmth upon our skin.
She’s now brimming with pride
As we dance away the cold —
Our thoughts on the new Spring tide.
