A minimum of 18.8ºC at the University of Reading Atmospheric Observatory this morning is well above the previous record (+16.7ºC) for the 30th of September. It is the second-warmest September night on record. The record from 1949 of 20.3ºC on the 5th of September still stands.
Scatter plot of every September daily minimum temperature at Reading since 1908, plotted by day of the month and coloured from blue (below the 1991–2020 average) to red (above it). Most minima fall between 4°C and 16°C, and a dashed line shows the average easing from about 11°C at the start of the month to about 10°C by the 30th. A red star marks 30 September 2026 at 18.8°C, the second-highest September minimum on record, behind 20.3°C on 5 September 1949, and 2.1°C above the previous 30 September record of 16.7°C from 1923.

Reading's 29th of September date maximum record is 26.8ºC in 2011, tomorrow looks to be close with a maximum of around 26ºC expected based on current model output.

It was the hottest July on record for mean temperature and mean maximum temperature in Reading since records began in 1908. By mean temperature, it is also the hottest month on record since 1908. Extraordinarily sunny too, with just over 358 hours recorded.
Line graph titled "Reading: July mean maximum, mean, and minimum temperatures, 1908–2026." Three time series are plotted in °C on the vertical axis against year on the horizontal axis, each with a dashed linear trend line. The mean daily maximum (red, upper line) rises from roughly 20–22°C in the early record to a record 28.3°C in 2026, trending +0.21°C per decade. The mean temperature (green, middle line) sits around 15–17°C historically and reaches a record 21.3°C in 2026, trending +0.21°C per decade. The mean daily minimum (blue, lower line) climbs from about 10–12°C to 14.2°C in 2026, trending +0.20°C per decade. All three lines show substantial year-to-year variability but a clear long-term upward trend, with the warmest values clustered in recent decades. The 2026 point on each line is highlighted in dark red and labelled; 2026 is the warmest July on record for both mean maximum temperature and mean temperature.

It's now the sunniest month on record in Reading - 345.6 hours beats the old record of 345.1 hours in May 2020, with continual sunshine records going back to around 1956. There are some earlier records of sunshine, but it still falls short of the record here.

303.5 hours on the Campbell Stokes recorder in the observatory to the 26th - the sunniest July on record at the university since records began in 1956. Leighton Park School recorded 344.5 hours in July 1911; it would require at least 8.3 hours a day to exceed this by month's end.

Still a way off any rainless day record - 34 days is the record with nil rainfall from 20th Feb to 25th March 1953, or 37 days with trace rainfall from 15th Aug to 20th Sept 1959 and 21st July to 26th Aug 1976. We're up to 24 currently

Reading is currently at 0.4 mm this month, and with nothing in the forecast (barring any rainfall at the 09 UTC obs this morning), it could very well be the driest month on record (since at least 1908). The current driest looks to be 0.5 mm in June 1925* or 0.8 mm in Apr 1912 and Sept 1959

The heatwave as seen in my garden in Earley, Reading. Four days with the maxima not far below 35C (highest 34.8C) and three tropical nights between. Thankfully much cooler now.

34.1°C maximum temperature on the 09 UTC observation this morning at the observatory is the highest June temperature on record since records began in 1908.

This is arguably the most insane weather forecast I have seen from the Met Office for any location in the UK, and it's in Reading. It is likely overdoing it slightly, but the all-time record of 37.6ºC could be exceeded on Tuesday or Wednesday.

AROME 12z has 36.6°C for Reading on Tuesday, would be decimating the old June record by 2.6°C.

It seems increasingly likely that Reading will break its all-time June record of 34.0°C from 1976, based on this multi-model ensemble suite, where the median sits at exactly 34.0°C on Tuesday and Wednesday with a higher envelope of potential temperatures exceeding 36 or even 37°C. Exceptional.
Line chart titled 'Reading June daily maximum temperatures (1908–2026*)' showing daily maximum temperatures for every June from 1908 to 2025 in light grey, with 2026 highlighted in solid red from 1–20 June. A dashed red line with shaded uncertainty bands shows a multi-model ensemble forecast for 21–25 June, with the median rising to 34.0°C on the 23rd and 24th - equalling the all-time June record and the upper end of the model range reaching 38.7°C.
