But outside of the eyes, I just really love the line work here. Thick, paintbrush-textured outlines with beautiful line weight variety. I love when an artist makes their line weight super pronounced; it just reads as silky smooth with nice depth. Gen Kobayashi does such great work here.

So I would say Paranormasight plays it pretty natural, but still draws attention to them, particularly in moments when characters' eyes widen and stretch a bit beyond their resting face. Notably, this expression is made most when characters are surprised or scared, which feels intentional.

You'll see a lot of art styles revered for how unique or how complicated they can make an eye, and we're naturally drawn to that as a key marker of emotion and generally as a part of communication or superstition about eyes being the window to the soul.

One of the reasons I really like the style of Paranormasight is its attention to expression in the eyes. They're not static and locked to one facial sprite; the pupils can move independent of the eye shape and those shapes are also, I would say, more exaggerated overall.

One of my favorite fun facts from Gintama. Just the contrast of Sakamoto living his best life and pigging out on heavy foods and Takasugi liking Yakult so much because he’s miserable.

I would like to ask if there is any food that Takasugi likes besides Yakult. If so, please let me know.

ANSWER:

Since Takasugi is always stressed and lives with his eyebrows furrowed, he instinctively seeks out foods that are delicate to his stomach, such as Yakult, yogurt and similar lactic-ferment based stuff. Sakamoto, on the other hand, is crazy about burgers, curry rice, ramen noodles, and the like.

Technically, I had shown Lio’s design before because he was done a few months ago, but I had never posted Manisha or the sketch pages prior because they were done for Art Fight and then Art Fight happened.

Also, if you’re curious, I named all my gym leaders after plants, as is sort of tradition on the Japanese side of Pokémon. They’re either named after their scientific name, which technically means some could be more than one plant, or their casual name, which is sometimes just a pre-existing name.

Thoughts on Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz

It's a little sad seeing people write Hero Destroyerz off as an outdated poop-joke manga, especially when its seen as a low-effort attempt by a legacy mangaka with special protections while "real" artists get axed.

I think it has a lot of merit. The story is working with concepts around leadership and insecurity, but most importantly, I'm seeing a narrative about cultivating an environment where you feel comfortable. That's what's set up with Kumon's initial conflict: not even the bathroom, a place of privacy and relief, is safe for him. Valaris III's whole motivation is to grow powerful and reinstate the rule of the demon king in a world where everyone and everything is against her. I think the school setting works to have this constant conflict of hierarchy and evoking experiences of in-grouping and out-grouping. It's a club of misfits without being cliche in the ways the kids find themselves down on their luck.

Honestly, I find the beginning of Hero Destroyerz to be a lot tighter than Gintama. I've watched the anime, of course, but I read the first 20 or so chapters recently, and while I was coasting in the early chapters, the chapter where Kondo is introduced was my true hook (same happened in the anime actually).

With Hero Destroyerz, I was hooked with Chapter 1. Then it fell off and got a little boring for Chapters 3 and 4 (2 kind of as well) and then I've been really enjoying Chapter 5 onwards. I think the expressions are pretty on point most of the time, and the quick-paced recurring character gags are the stuff I love. It's cozy. Frankly, I'd like it to get more unhinged. Chapter 13 was my favorite in terms of comedy, being a real highlight for having gag after gag after gag.

I've seen people say that people saying it's like Gintama are making excuses because look! Gintama is one of the best ranked comedies on MAL! People got the humor, Hero Destroyerz just sucks! And to that I say: that's cropping out the full picture. Gintama is ranked highly on MAL, but it's FAR from being actually popular in the West - you can even see that on MAL. For being a mainstream shonen that wrapped up in 2021, its numbers are WAY low. The barrier for entry is simply higher. Yes, there's a lot of episodes, but I think it's the hurdle of it being a raunchy comedy in the first place. If people don't like it, they're tapping out. And we know the reasons why The Final and Season 4 are ranked the highest is not primarily because of the funnies. Frankly, as a Gintama fan, I think some people forget that sometimes watching Gintama is like crawling through the trenches. There's some REALLY low stuff in there. And it's not as infrequent as I would like it. But it all pails in comparison to all the good it has, jokes or otherwise. It's a show that only gets better, and it's with my hope that Hero Destroyerz is able to play out in JUMP.

I don't need it to be Gintama. I already have Gintama! A lot of it! We've been fed well. I never had the expectation that Hero Destroyerz would surpass it because very little of anything surpasses those highs for me. Personally, I'd like to see a little bit more heart in Hero Destroyerz. It has less of a feel-good setup like the Odd Jobs had, but we have these little glimpses of heart like at the end of the last chapter that I'd just like to see pull through. Get its own "you guys are heavy" moment.

Also more Kaichou. Give me more Kaichou please. BENCH SASHIMI FOR TWO SECONDS GIVE ME KAICHOU PLEAS HE'S STARVING IN THE CORNER!
