I get a lot of people dislike Doi's designs because they tend to be little inspired by the original mythological figures. But then you look at some of Doi's original concept art and see they have a lot more sensibilities. Rather, I strongly believe Atlus is mostly to blame here for restricting Doi.

Not the first to say this and won't be the last, but this Fionn seems especially egregious. I personally love Doi's artwork, but it's wild that in the end he actually ended up designing the better Fionn. This just looks plainly uninspired.

It's kind of depressing seeing just how much Kaneko has fallen from grace. Like this stupid AI slop game isn't even wholly illustrated by him, but generates images in his style. What the fuck even happened to get to this point.

Another boss fight where the third party member, Airin, joins the cause. I stopped here after this, but the next destination sounds like another labyrinth -- The Repulse. You know for as relatively simple this game is, it is pretty fun and just nice to kick back to something SMT-esque. I like this.

You can fully recover by eating at any restaurant. Despite literal carnage happening just outside, business is going as usual. Just like real life! Maybe for the best though since the stores are literally the only safe zones from the monsters, for whatever reason.

Got to the end of The Bizarre where a boss demon and a dead guard awaited me. On the other side is the central mall, where more of the same can be found: visitors trapped in the mall teeming with monsters and desperate to get out. Most of them are hiding in the stores.

We evacuated the mall visitors only to find that the mall exits have all sealed, then the east wing spontaneously transforms. You know, in typical mall fashion. This is where the real dungeon crawling starts. The whole map's unmarked territory, so this is sure to get interesting.

The mall has transformed into a white corridor.
Reiha: "...This area wasn't like this before."

Reiha: Is this place transforming itself?
The protagonist can respond with "Pretty much" or "Malls are like this".

I get the sense that other Megaten fans tend to wave off this game as nothing, but actually, I really like the monster designs in this. They're so eldritch-looking and uncanny. Definitely this game's highlight.

So plot: I, Rusty Blart mall cop, go to diffuse several mall-related incidents and then find a weird phone-like object called a Tabernacle in the washroom. Then demons start appearing and Reiha, from WorldPol, comes to assist me. There's no scouting, but you can use the phones to scan demon skills.

Protagonist opens a box in the washroom. A note inside reads: "Live and thou shall rule the new world. Use thy Tabernacle wisely."

And of course, the actual first-person dungeon crawling from early SMT games. It has such strong Megami Ibunroku Persona vibes. All the mall stores sell medicine or clothing to wear as equipment. I can't get over how incredible this all is.

This actually blew my mind; the shop interiors are inspired by Persona 3 Portable with the point-and-click cursor. I love this actually. This game is taking so much inspiration from Megaten as a whole than I ever expected, it's incredible.

Probably the most unique opening premise I've encountered in any game thus far: you play as a security guard in a mall. Of course not just any mall, but one with suspicious supernatural activity.

The security guard supervisor: "Hey, kid. You new around here? Never seen you before." The available responses are "Just started" and "Been here a while".
