See you in Krakow! A city I first learned of as a kid through this Calvin and Hobbes strip. #KotlinConf
Panel 1: Shot of a spaceship flying by a ringed planet.

Calvin: "Fearless Spaceman Spiff closes in on the fleeing Zargons!"

Panel 2: Closer shot of spaceship.

Calvin: "One again our hero is about to teach vicious alien scum that virtue is its own reward! He locks onto target!"

Panel 3: Cut to Susie sitting in a classroom, furtively looking behind her.

Susie: "Psst, Calvin! What was the capital of Poland until 1600?
Calvin (from off-panel): Krakow.

Panel 4: Wider show of classroom, showing Calvin sitting behind Susie, miming piloting a spaceship

Susie: "Thanks."
Calvin: "Krakow! Krakow! Two direct hits!"

I think a piece of this is, there's been a concerted attack on expertise as a concept, as well as destruction of trusted institutions. So it's harder to have a shared truth that's widely agreed-upon as an alternative to conspiracy theories.

I'm glad to see that, 3 years later, you're no longer invisible.

I have complicated feelings about the "we decided to let them" framing. On the one hand, *I* didn't decide anything. I wasn't even alive during the Reagan admin! On the other hand, if *we* let this happen then maybe *we* can stop it, so I can see how framing it that way could help motivate change.

Hasn't the Gulf of Mexico been labeled Gulf of America in Google Maps for a year and a half now? Nobody should be surprised that this would happen a second time.

In fact, getting coworkers to consistently show up to do code reviews is such a hard problem that now, in the AI era, we've decided to increase code review demand and make it the entire job.

I've been really surprised at how sticky the term KMM has been, long after it went away officially.

Later you get a chance to turn Adolph Hitler into a famous painter and prevent World War II. The game also has a subplot about a couple trying to steal a baby, and a scene where you can accidentally set off a bomb on the already-sinking ship. The 90s were quite a time.

I mostly know of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám from the 1996 PC game Titanic: Adventure out of Time, in which you, a British secret agent aboard the Titanic, must intercept a copy of the Rubáiyát so it doesn't get sold to fund assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Success means you prevent World War I.

I'm not a current user, but for a 0.0.x version I think this should generally be fine, and if you're going to do it, sooner is better than later. Maybe throw up a github issue or discussion to notify people who aren't on social media.

We've lost a giant of the early PC game music scene. Commander Keen 4 was the first game I ever played, so my earliest gaming memories were accompanied by Bobby Prince's soundtrack. Much of his work can be heard on the Video Game Music Preservation Foundation wiki. www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.p...

Not my belief, but a funny interpretation of E1 is that AI is a total scam, it will destroy the world economy, and then we will somehow (step 2: ??? step 3: profit) build a post-scarcity world from the ashes.

The idea of dark output feels like a deeply ironic inversion of @doctorow.pluralistic.net's recent article about process knowledge. Claiming AI has invisible outputs while discounting the "invisible" human knowledge and judgement that these models don't account for. pluralistic.net/2026/04/08/p...

One piece I've been missing in this convo is, what do the per-token economics look like for the AI providers even if users accept the new costs? Does the per-token rate actually reflect OpenAI/Anthropic's costs, or are they still losing money until they do another rug-pull by hiking rates?

"I would bet that by another year or two from now, there is a much better rationalization of companies' spend relative to outcomes" This is probably true, but not in the way Sam thinks it will happen.
